Engine bay cleaning

Well today I thought as the rad and fan are out and all engine panels off might be a good time to tackle some of the grime thats built up on and around the engine and bay, I was gonna tape up electrics and use a product called gunk to try and remove the worst if it, but I was thinking about rinsing.. Is it ok to rinse of with a hose afterwards..
Any hints or tips would be greatly received..
 
I have just completed a similar task on Bertie the Punto using Gunk. I too was worried about using water in the engine bay, particularly with Fiat electronics (although they are mostly GM components in the Cabrio). I took all the precautions you mention, then used a steam cleaner to rinse it, followed by a cloth. Obviously the steam still produces water in the engine bay, but much less than with a hose and the heat helps with the grime. Once the electrics were connected again, it started first time and ran smoothly. I have also found the source of the oil leak!
 
Well it was worth it then a clean engine bay and oil leaked traced.. Did you fink that product pretty good??
 
Yes, it did the job. Gunk has been around for donkeys years and as far as I am aware it is still the standard product for the job. I don't know if others have experience of other products, but I'm sure they will let you know if they have. The leak is from the cam cover gasket (a nice easy to access gasket).
 
Gunk is great stuff. Scrub it into the grime with a stiff brush and let it soak in for a while then rinse off. Smells great when the engine gets warm:cool:
 
The crossmember sometimes get loaded with road dirt and oil so scrape of the majority first, Gunk is good but it has it limitations;)
