I do new electronic dizzy's or there is an ongoing topic to an ad on system :)

A few of us are trying these - but make sure you get the right ones for you dizzy - they are not interchangeable.

Martin does a complete electronic dizzy if you want a proven system - but they are quite a bit more expensive.

it sounds like you have more of a fuel problem than ignition :)

Strange it should happen on petrol and gas though[V]
The 25D has longer cap clips and it has 25D cast into the upper casing near the vacuum diaphragm - well mine does:I If it is a 45D be careful because there are two type at least - self wiping points and non-self wiping points and the base plate is different.

I have a luminition one which is top (top in that its not points and it doesn't need fidding with all the time!) its quite dear though.

I have a flame thrower coil too which is nice.

I think I got mine direct.

there are 3 type of dizzy on commers

D25 which have long (2 1/2"?) distributor cap clips
D45 which have shorter (1"?) cap clips
Duceller which are er... different...

hope that helps

Rupert

p.s. was posting at the same time as me! I think the self wiping points are blue and the non-self wiping ones are red...

excessive heat is the enemy of all fuels [xx(]
but certainly well worth fitting proper ignition even if it isn,t the problem ;)

Just fitted a full replacement 'performance' Lucas 45D type electronic dizzy from www.simonbbc.com @ £58 - seems a bargain but long term reliability and robustness will hopefully confirm this.

Initial results extremely promising though and shop owner very helpful and prompt dispatching.

:)Hi
Just checked my Dizzy and it does have a casting close to the vac unit that says its a 25D so just ordered a eletronic kit from ebay came to £20 in the end so should be good.
Ill let you al know how it goes

Thanks Again

:)Hi
Fitted the electronic ignition kit from ebay yesterday SOooooo easy to do and started 1st time on the key and idled smoothly. but the story goes on . I had a good run today up and down the country roads of East Yorkshire after a short while (Betty my Van) just cut out and wouldnt restart no matter what i did . checked for a spark no good nothing, all the lives and switching earths were there only thing left was the coil (which was about 6 months old and 600 miles of use) swapped this with the original and Betty sparked into life !!!!!! anyone think the new electronic points thing would have buggered the coil up ? or more sensible the coil was the problem all the time ?
Im off on tour along the coast of East Yorkshire tommorow starting in Bridlington then onto Filey and then onto Whitby/Goathland (going to get some photos at the Scrips Garage !!! will try and post some pics. hope she goes on and doesnt break down !! wil keep u all updated when i get back.:D

regards

Sorry to hear you've had problems too, did you get yours electronic ignition from 'Simonbbc' ? Ours complete dizzy kit appears to have fried our brand new Lucas Sports coil which Simonbbc confirmed would be fine.

Sadly, when I swapped back to our mechanical dizzy (before realising the coil issue) this shortly broke shearing it's drive on the oil pump and possibly damage to the camshaft etc too.

I've heard this before [V]
We are hoping to go to Gothland Sat, Abbots house Farm. Perhaps we can meet up ;)

Electronic ignition without a rectifier (which that kit doesnt seem to have looking at the pic) will eat a coil fast
Martin had the last few of my "Commer tested" electronic ignitions, so anyone who needs one knows where to go. Dont know how long Martins own van has been running one but mines been fine for 2k miles now :)

we,ve been here before jules :I you mean a ballast resistor.
these are meant for use with 8v coils to give more saturation at high rpm.not really applicable to commers.
seems the problem most likely lies in the coils ohm rating, sports coils have fewer primary windings and allow more current to pass to the points. a decent old school 12v coil should be fine with this ignition :)

"you were only supposed to blow the bloody SLIDING doors off"

Hmm, not sure. The ballast (which is after all only to boost on churning) should be combined with a rectifier or smoother to ensure that the coil current is killed on power down (within 1 sec) - I dont see how this set up could do this. Neither do I see how the kit gets around the issue of concentric (worn) central spindle path, or vary the dwell. But i'm probably just missing something.:I

Hi everyone, just got back after a 200 mile trip around Bridlington,Scarbourogh,Whitby and Goathland and then back to sunny Hull..

My problem seems to have been fixed by fitting the old rusty coil back on,it ran fine for the whole trip runs very smooth and starts from cold after about a turn of the engine !! the leccy ignition seems to be fine although there is a chance that it buggered my new coil up. Anyone know a good coil that will be fine with this type of ignition kit? dont want to put another one on for it to knacker up again..

I have LPG on the van which runs great for the long run but when i come into a town and get stuck at traffic lights and its idling for a while when i set off again it splutters and cuts out, anyone got any ideas ?? when i put it back on petrol for a short time and then back on LPG then it runs great..

Martin i went to Goathland today "What a scorcher" !! i came from Whitby to Goathland and some of the hills i was down to 1st gear at 10MPH struggling to keep going !! Sh*ting myself and wife was a bit concerned aswell !! But saying that im back at home looking back at the days away with happyness and glee !!

any comments on my Commer problems would be great

Regards Amos [8D][8D]
