Electronic Distributor

Hi

I'm going to buy a new electronic distributor am I correct in that I need a Lucas 45D with vacuum and a top cap? Also do I need to buy a timing light to set it up properly once I've fitted it (correctly this time).

45D is fine and a timing light is always a good idea, but you'll probably end up tweaking it by hand to get it just right allowing for inaccuracies in the timing marks and wear.

Hi All,

I am about to get a new electronic dizzy as I have lost all spark and figure I might as well ditch the points at the same time. I tried swapping the coil and I still don't have any spark. I changed the points and cleaned the rotor and nothing.

Upon further inspection I notice that there was a loose wire. When I tried stripping it back there didn't seem to be any actual wire in there. Can anyone tell me what this this does and would it stop the coil from igniting? I would just add some wire to it as a hack job but it's just an empty cloth sleeve.

The low-tension circuit
The low-tension circuit feeds low-voltage current from the battery to the ignition coil, where it is boosted to high voltage for the spark plugs.
Just copied this off a google search 'distributor lt lead'. It may help

It completes the low tension circuit to earth. You could use the wire off an old condenser if you've got one laying around.

Ta. From looking at it I cannot imagine it was ever connected. I might buy a service kit (which includes one) and see if I can get it working.

Then get the electronic dizzy and keep the old one as a spare.

Good call. The lead must have been connected at some point and it's just failed. I used to fly model aircraft and the servo leads sometimes suffered from negative lead corrosion where the entire wire core turned to carbon dust, I wonder if this could be the same kind of thing.

Yeah, no idea. It's hard to imagine anything in there but it could have just vibrated the last strand into dust.

My kingdom for a spark.

I had all sorts of trouble with the ignition on jato look on the net for a company called accuspark I got new electronic dizzy plugs leads coil the hole kit I think it was £95 including vat and post .jato has never run so good and timming marks are steady at idle

I thought I might have trouble with the ignition (points + ballast resistor) on my Commer and I half considered going electronic... but I bought a Mini distributer vacuum pipe (for the carb end gone soft mainly) first:-

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CLASSIC-MINI-ROVER-MINI-VACUUM-PIPE-FOR-CARB-OR-INJECTION-CARS-12B2062-12B2095/182633268819?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2648

Turned out the strangler(choke) cable had chafed a small hole in the pipe itself. Restored the previous excellent engine performance.

Just in case anybody using the search function finds this I'll post up my results.

I put in a Lucas 25D service kit which including a new low tension terminal. I started it up and it ran for about 5 seconds then lost spark again. I retraced my steps to see what went wrong and it turns out the earth connection (number 1 in the diagram) had come off. It was only on by a couple of strands. It didn't come in the service kit and I couldn't get the screw out on the base plate so I just drilled a tiny hole and bolted it to that.

Started first kick. Should keep me out of trouble until I can get a new flash electronic dizzy.

Yeah, not the worst result. At least it has a new set of points and is good to go for a while.

Only problem is I didn't take a picture of the tacho wiring so I have to chase that back and do it again. I need to put in the fuel gauge wiring anyway so not like I'll be bored.

I should really start a build thread.
