electrics (lights/flat battery)

I went out last evening with the driffield vw club and came back in the dark it was the first time the lights have been on in anger ,however when I turned them on the indicators didn't work or the fan heater and by the time I had got home the battery was flat .
since Iv owned it the indicator dash light stayed on but flashed brighter when the indicators are turned on I thought it was because there was a new flasher unit fitted and it was a wrong part could this be the start point for fault finding the ignition light didn't come at any point so I dnt think its a charging problem. when I switched the lights off every thing worked again.
electrics are a bit of a grey area to me so any pointers would help
Thanks All

The fact that everything works when you turn the lights off suggests to me that you have a bad earth on the headlights, the flat battery seems to be a seperate fault, possibly a non charging alternator, or you could have a poor earth to the battery itself causing only some electrics to work at once and also not enough charge back to the battery but you would have noticed starting the van would have been troublesome or very slow turnover, very difficult to diagnose electrickery over the forum but good luck.;)

Dont try and lead me astray....i know the way myself!!

I agree with Charlie. Almost defo earthing problems. Could be a broken wire in the lighting system so the current has to return through the other systems. This could cause all kind of strange things to happen like the indicators going funny.

Now with a bundle of joy - and a commer!

thanks guys I have had intermittent starting problems too just as you described Charlie so I will start with the simple stuff first

your most welcome, no point learning stuff if you cant share it with someone. every days a school day in my book.

well I think I have solved it when I went underneath the starter motor was half hanging of so I tightened it up I also tightened up the quick release clamps on the bty and so far the bty hasn't gone flat and Iv been out with the lights on too .Iv still not cured the indicator light on the dash yet but thanks again guys
