electric water pumps

Hi all, sorry not been around much lately. Maybe get be a daft question...Thinking of fitting an electric water pump over winter along with and electric fan. Question is With the pump, after removing the fan would you just bypass the fan pully with a shorter fan belt and leave the old pump in there I.e would the water pressure from the electric pump just spin it anyhow and therefore not cause any problems? Removing the pump itself and blocking the resulting hole would be a right pain (also the heater feed goes directly back into the pump housing which would make it even more difficult). Also would you leave in the thermostat or remove it and allow the pump to regulate the flow?

What is making you go for an electric pump? I ask as it seems an awful lot of uncertainty about the correct procedure. I've come across many an engine that has had a water pump conversion (mainly due to lack of availability for new pumps) in my time most of which have worked reasonably well but I've never come across an electric one. I personally would definitely leave the stat in as that runs independently to the pump which I would also leave in and would by pass the pulley with a shorter belt. I assume that the pump is placed into the top hose.

I've had a Davies Craig lekky pump fitted to Harvey for years and it's great. It's fitted between the bottom hose and the pump inlet, I got Tim to blank off the pump where the fan used to fit so it just acts as an elbow into the block. I have seen it where a plate with an elbow attached was used to replace the pump completely. This does away with the by-pass hose so I've got the stat fitted with a couple of small holes drilled in it to create a small flow on warm up so the stat sees the coolant temperature and operates as it should.
It is a tight fit but I've moved the rad forward a bit to give some more room, that also helps fitting an electric fan on the rad side, so no mechanical fan either. I used a shorter fan belt just to drive the alternator.

Just playing with the idea, always want something new to do :). Not sure I can remove the water pump housing and blank it off as it's a huge single unit with pipes coming off it all over the place and the thermostat is then bolted onto the water pump housing. I think when it was put togeather (alloy head engine from a Hunter) the pump is from a different variation so it all fitted behind the rad. Wondering if I could remove just the impeller itself from the pump if it shouldn't stay in there and then find a way to block the shaft hole...saying that maybe the shaft will just stay in there if can get the impeller off.

I needed a new pump anyway and fitting the lekky pump and fan saves a few horses. They are cooling a Rapier engine and the extra power from the engine needs a bit more cooling capacity and these, coupled with a small auxiliary rad in the heater return, work really well. Another bonus is the new pump doesn't suffer from cavitation when things warm up and has a full flow at idle - actually Tim made me do it;)

Hi panky thought I posted to you yesterday but must not have sent. How come no commer attend the wentworth classic car event.

I've no idea John, it's not an event I'm familiar with and a long way for us to travel if we did go. As you know Commers are thin on the ground and it wold be unusual to see one at any show, you just need to be lucky I guess. Maybe if you put a post in the 'Meets and Shows' section for any up coming event you fancy someone will reply and go along.
The only organised shows (apart from casual meets) we attend as a group are the Moffat Rootes Rally in June and the Tatton Park show in August but we're giving Tatton a rest next year so maybe someone else will organise something.

I was going to take a look at tatton next year but at least iv got another year to work on my dodge now. I thought wentworth south yorkshire would be accessible to most with it being central. Where are most of your casual meets. Sorry for all the questions but I'm new to all this

I ran my Imp Sport with a leccy pump (Johnson make I think?) for many years with no issues. Wouldn't think twice to do so again.

We have fairly regular meets at Martin Maltas' place in North Yorkshire, he has a great little campsite just right for a bunch of Commers. The next one is the weekend of bonfire night - time to party:D
But we are willing to go pretty much anywhere if someone wants to organise something. I know Martin will be at Pistons and Props at Saywell this weekend, not sure if any other Commers will be there, unfortunately I wont:(

I’m down in Devon so everwhere is far lol

Ran quite a few lecky pumps, and still do. There's no reason you can't just leave the stock pump as it is and fit a lecky one with just a shorter belt, but personally i would gut the pump and blank the pulley hole.

Off the subject I've been trying to find out if you still have that old slider as I'm trying to find a pair of half decent slider door windows?????
