Earth spark at crank handle

Ok here's another puzzler.

I remember accidentally starting the Commer with the cranking handle plugged in. I was looking down into the engine bay whilst starting and saw sparks flickering where the handle slots into the socket.

Would that just be a bad earth from the chassis to the block or something more sinister?

Any ideas?
