OK, Duke is back home now and many thanks to Martin for investing in time and pateince in helping me out with him. It is proving to be an on-going saga (bit like Downton Abbey) and he's having a new aluminium tank made up over Christmas so that in the New Year we'll all be back in business!

OK,Duke now has a new aluminium tank thanks to Chris on this forum and I managed to source the right connections so I could replace the entire fuel line with new. He started well and was about to go on out on a test drive when he got stuck on the gravel drive. With so much rain he seems to sink right down onto the mud underneath the gravel and then dig himeslf in.

Does anyone know how to improve the solidity of a driveway. I was thinking of putting some slabs down underneath the stones after using loads of straw to mop up initially and/or a piece of old carpet.
 
I'm not a builder but I think if you put slabs under the gravel you will end up grinding the gravel away between the wheels and the slabs. I would think that first job would be to put a drain in then a layer of hard core whacked down then the gravel on top - or just two rows of slabs where the wheels go:I

Ok the best thing to do is remove the gravel then take away 4/6" of the mud then put road scalpings down as its cheaper than type 1 mot hire a wacker plate and compress it down then put no more than 2" of gravel on top as a finish coat and hay presto solid drive that will last you

Thanks Rich-Lou thats how we made the driveway but mother nature seems to have thwarted our efforts. I think we may have to hire the wacker plate again and re-lay the top coat as well as put slabs where the wheels are. Thanks for the reply, Tim
 
Its small, about 40 feet long and 25 feet deep.I think your point about the depth of the top coat is a good one so we're going to take a load off!
 
Try crushed concrete as a base to compress. wet it as you go and compress it well. It'll tend to dry into something like normal concrete (surprise surprise!) and should stay good and firm below your gravel.

OK, now Duke and the drive are almost totally sorted and my next door neighbour has given him a new look! He's being put back together and I'll post some new pics of him up in the next day or two nonw in a new 'blood and custard' livery. He looks great with silver wheels too...
