Duke is now for sale

After much nashing of teeth etc we've decided to put Duke up for sale and will be placing an auction for him on E-Bay. If members of the forum would like to e-mail me for further details I'm happy to give anyone a first crack before I launch the advert. I'm sticking with Commers but would like to try something else for the time-being. The draft for the advert reads...and I think there are some photo's of him on the site but I want to take some more before I put him up for auction.

This auction is for our Commer camper van, ‘Duke’. We’ve owned him for five years and he’s been a terrific source of pride and pleasure though life has now taken over us and its time to wave a sad farewell.
Duke was the cover star on ‘Classic Camper Vans – The Inside Story’ by Martin Watts and you can read about him in this book and in another book by the same author called ‘Classic Dormobile Camper Vans’.

He comes with some spares, the above books and a small collection of Commer memorabilia which form part of his history with us. All in all a very nice van and an iconic piece of British history.

• He is a 1972 Dormobile Conversion with the 1725cc Rootes engine
• An electronic ignition was fitted a couple of years ago along with a new aluminium petrol tank and fuel lines
• The brakes were re-built as part of regular servicing and work well
• The inside is original though he has new curtains and cab carpet
• The roof bunks both work well and there is a cab hammock as well so he has the capacity to sleep 5
• He is very reliable and the battery maintains a good charge and everything works as it should
• He is tax free and has a current MOT
• He was given a fresh coat of paint last year and his colour is now a fetching BMC maroon and cream
• The condition of the bodywork is very good and underneath is A1, extremely solid

I am happy to answer any questions or to arrange viewings and will expect the winning bidder to make a 10% deposit within 24 hours of the auction closing or he’ll be put straight back on the site. Duke should be collected and paid for within two weeks of the close of the auction or again he’ll be considered still for sale.

Great looking van, sad that your letting it go but hopefully it goes to a great new owner.

Has this van only covered 4000 miles since new? If that's the case that's crazy for a vehicle that's 42 years old!

"Please note this correction: Current mileage is 3, 999 and was only 3,219 at the MOT in April this year. The van has only been driven about 6/700 miles each year, pottering to the beach and back. Thanks, Tim."

Maybe he means since the spray job? However the interior does look in excellent shape especially when compared to mine!

It says at the bottom it's done just over 19000 miles, so the other mileage is since Tim had the van.

It went for £6200 .00 in the end and considering the low mileage and the seemingly excellent condition of both the interior and exterior that was a bit of a steal. Bearing in mind a bay window VW in similar condition would fetch 20k upwards. Like this one below.

Looks fair compared to this 1970 BMC J4 Dormobile BIN price though:-
