Drinking loads of fuel

Poppy seems to be drinking it at the mo, it's runnin very rich but the air mixture screw seems to not make any difference apparat from I get a whistling sound from the engine bay, I was told it might be an air leak from either the carb gasket or manifold, it doesn't help that the valve guides have gone and it's burning oil like mad, any ideas what to do first ???

We have a similar issue with chrissie, even when engine off the fuel still pumping and going on floor underneath cab via what appears to be a breather type pipe? We fitted a weber carb conversion last year and we found that the rubber float in the carb, was absorbing the fuel and therefore the float level kept filling up. We have replaced it and the weekend will tell if it's worked. I'm not sure if this the same for you, just hope it may help.

First thing to do is see what the whistling is, if it's an air leak it must be a big one:I It might be obvious like the nuts holding the carb on come loose, if not start the engine and spray WD-40 around the inlet manifold and carb gaskets - if you find a leak with the spray it will get sucked in and the engine note will change (and a lot of smoke out of the exhaust;)) Once the leak is fixed you can set the carb up properly - if it's not knackered[xx(]

Burning oil could be piston rings.:(
Is there a puff of smoke on start-up or smoking all the time?

The simpler the betterer...

It's not the carb loose I checked that, but will try the wd40 thing, it smokes mostly black but blue sometimes too, air filters clean too...and there is def no petrol leaks even tho it stinks of fuel....anyway off to buy a dodge diff today !!!!

Sounds like it's running very rich[xx(] Turn the mixture screw right in then back a turn and a half, but this is only the idle mixture so the problem might lay elsewhere in the carb - like a sticking float as Zena suggested.

Throw the carb in the bin and fit an SU :)

Tried the wd40 thing today and no change, already did the one and a half turn thing, may get a overhall kit..or bin it...as I use it every day it's hard to choose an answer and a cheap one !!

Had same problem a few years back, mixture screw made no difference, chucked the Zenith and fitted Weber from Speedies all fixed no problems since. :)
