Just found a naughty little water trap inside the door mirrors - went to change cracked mirror and was half full of water and happily rotting out from inside out - this was after wire brushing...
now realise that mirror must have cracked when water inside froze during last frost[B)]
might be worth a check if yours same type, was no sign of any problems externally.

!] Have coated mine now with Krust and then painted with Hammerite. Going to pick up replacement glass later and will then put some sealant around to prevent the water getting in
