gonna have a practice on a bit of scrap today then tackle the holes in the new wheel arch and go from there. probably didnt help that i dove in at the deep end by trying to do a edge to edge join instead of everlapping it as im told that is much easier. but i didnt want that piece to overlap as its very close to the outer rear panel and didnt want to end up unable to get it on when the time comes haha. soon as i get a feel for it i will start to fly through it as i will just setup a light and crack on at night as well lol. shoudl be moving over the next 2 weeks but dolly is able to stay here til feb 28th still

rear wheel arch is nearly ready to go in now. had a practice and although my welding is still a bit sloppy it is taking very well now that the wire speed has been turned down. im gradually getting better with each weld so it looks like im starting to get a feel for the welder. pics later

few pics of progress today. still a bit sloppy but much better than before. think i need to turn the speed back up a tad but it penetrated well and its 100 percent solid so im happy for now
i ground it back a little bit but not completely yet as i will make it good once its mot'd. for now i have rust treated it and i will red oxide it later tonight then its ready to go in it was much easier to weld with the speed set lower but i think it needs to go back up a notch as although i can weld 1 spot at a time i cant get it to weld a line for love nor money. i think i need a full face mask as i cant see through my 1 at all and half the prob is that i cant use my other hand to steady the nozzle and hold my mask in front of me :I

You should have said, as i have a couple of old headsheilds i no longer use. If you can,t see, chances are you have the wrong lens fitted, or a knackered one [xx(]. No.9 is about right for light mig work.
Are you grinding the weld area clean ? as that will make a big difference, a good weld is mostly down to preparation

yh im cleaning it all up beforehand m8, i think most of the problem is not being able to see as having to guess. i didnt think to ask you why i was up there oh well. will grab 1 next time i come up there if thats ok m8 in the mean time i will try to get a new screen for my mask as i think that will help. still. at least its all solid this time and a lot neater considering i couldnt see lol

Keep at it Paul, your tenacity is inspirational. I visited my workshop last weekend and wimped off because it was too cold and have you seen what that Panky bloke has been up to in this weather?

I love red oxide once you clean something up and get a coat of it on it makes it look much neater

should be dry by tomorrow. got a bit more welding to do on the inner sill before i can put it in then make up the corner section and presto :I a sexy new ass for dolly

Paul as your un employed why dont you ask the job centre about you enrolling on a welding coarse and they will pay the costs involved?? It will give you a qualification and help your hobby along the way. Just dont tell them you have got a rusty commer at home I did a 3year coarse and it was brilliant

great idea mate but sadly they wont do it. our job center has changed its policy now. if you get offered a job that requires a qualification the will help but otherwise they say its down to you i also asked about a lorry driving coarse as there re loads of jobs about for hgv drivers but no joy there either. looking into maybe going into care work now to be honest i love having time to spend on dolly and with owen but its driving me nuts not having a job and an income

well what a day i have had [B)] started welding this morning and after an hour or so disaster struck[:0] co2 bottle ran out [!] i need to get a new trigger for the mig as its leaking and sticking [V] had no choice but to try to carry on gassless
strangely i soon realised that without the gas my welding seemed to improve a bit. although i had to go slow as hell and spot weld bit by bit i managed to get the rear wheel arch in as well as most of the rear floor and a bodywork repair. im now wishing i had saved a bit more money and got a proper gassless welder.
this was the first bit i dad without co2
ok so it all needs a bit of tidying up but that can wait til summer. for now i just need solid lol hopefully i will get the rear finished tomorrow and then im ready to attack the front [^]

Tell you what mate you are doing a grand job of it thus far. This reminds me of the work i have previously done. My advice is this. If you are welding gasless, do it when it's not so cold outside.Grind the welds down and look for pinholes as water will seep through and make all your hard work pointless. If you are mates with your local pub landlord he/she can get you a big bottle of co2 for under a tenner if you promise to give the bottle back
