An SU is about as easy as it gets, just make sure you have a new float chamber gasket because it will probably break when you open it up. Then it's a matter of blowing through any crevices and checking the needle and spindles for wear. One thing - have you topped up the dashpot with oil? it will cause rough running if it's empty.

to be honest mate until last night it didnt even register lol. i will have to check that before i do anything else lol would the float chamber gasket be the same on all su carbs then m8 as i have no idea what mine came off of to order one hahaha them compression testers are quite cheap :) may get 1 and try it, what should the compression be?

Hi Paul,The SU is probably the easiest carb i have ever worked on.

I assume you have an SU-HIF6, if so Fuel Miser make a overhaul kit for it.
I think from memory[|)],,, the part number is SU760.
The main jet is accessed from the bottom "float bowl" and a complete replacement is in the kit plus all gaskets etc plus a diagram.
One important note, do not remove the mixture needle from the piston. The needle very rarely needs replacing and is factory adjusted and doesn't come in the fuel miser kit. The damper clearance is also worth checking. Its the little brass plunger on the end of the bit where you put the oil in. The clearance info and extra spacers are in the kit.

If the carby is low on damper oil or the damper is buggered you may here a tapping noise comming from the SU as the engine misses/almost stalls.
These carbys can be pretty buggered and still work quite well, i had one that needed topping with oil every week or it would idle very low and try and stall at low rpm.
There is also a few different opinions on what oil to use in it.
My dad always used to use sewing machine oil but i find standard automatic trans oil to be fine. Oh and the gaskets are not all the same for all SU.

Hope this helps,
Paul[8D]

cheers for that mate, i will be tackling this soon, i just checked my oil in the carb, i didnt pull the lid right off though i just lifted it out to look in. i would say its about half full but i couldnt see a marker to indicate how much should be in there?? i got a best dad tax disk holder and air freshner in her now as well. went to the boot sale this morning and got myself a wheel chock and a set of 4 70's style green and cream cussions :) dont need them yet but at 1.00 for all 4 i couldnt say no :)

It's OK to pull the plunger right out, top it up to the top of the tube, you will find quite a resistance as you push it back in. As Ausie Commer Paul says there is always a debate on the best oil to use, I've always used engine oil and had no problems:)

hey again guys, i cant believe my luck, the day they put my internet on at work. i turn up and POOF :D BANG goes the computer [:(!]:D only just got a new one so here i am just in time for summer. its been a rough few months and i have to admit something disgracefull [V] i actually considered the S word for dolly, yes... SELL. i havent touched her since i got this job and i was finding it difficult to look at her and see her sitting there looking all unloved :( then i realised something ;) i have spent nearly a year killing myself trying to get everything at work spot on for our future (nothing wrong with that) but i have neglected to allow myself any time to relax or enjoy our new life. and so now i have decided to MAKE time [:0]

this friday dolly is getting a clearout, wash, polish and being loaded with a few bits. monday She will hit the road once more going to our first boot sale in her [8D] only round the corner but she hasnt moved since the zoo so i figure it will do her good :p planning on using her for work every sat if all goes well.

so... long story short. IM BACK and dolly is going nowhere :D
