help:( got the new fuel guage on which tim kindly sent which should of married upto the new fuel tank and sender but no reading at all[V] there is juice going to the guage because if you swap wires around the needle flicks rapidly. if i put the smiths guage on the needle moves very little. i put in approx 5 gallons of fuel in so it should read 1/2 tank,if i rock the van you can hear the float knocking on the wall of the tank. any ideas please[?]

Gauges are rarely accurate. 1/2 on the gauge does not necessarily mean 1/2 in the tank. Fill it to the brim then see where it goes. Peggy's only just goes above 3/4 when brimmed. Reaches 1/2 after about 50 miles then takes ages to move to 1/2 an so on.....

as i said baz i have put 5 gallons in approx and the guage has not moved:( i cannot keep guessing to how much fuel i have left:I

Mark, i set them up to be pessimistic, so with about 3 galls it will read near empty.
Its not possible for the float to touch the side.
It could be the baffle has come un-tacked and is jamming the float.
Try putting a bit more in and see if either gauge reads any different.
As always, its a matter of getting to know it :)

tim been under van today and it does sound like the knocking is on the bottom n/s:( when i was there also found brake fluid leaking[V] all in all a good day:p:D

Is that the bottom of the fuel tank you mean [?]
If so it could be the baffles.
Last resort is take the tank off and remove the sender for a look. Then play about with it out of the tank, not forgetting to earth it :)
