Not necessarily. When you fit a new dizzy (have you taken out that broken bit yet?) you may find that the engine won't start properly or at all. If that's the case you may have to remove the dizzy then turn the engine 1 revolution and re-fit. IIRC no.1 cylinder reaches TDC twice during one revolution of the engine, if you re-fit the dizzy at the wrong one it won't work. Sometimes people just swap the HT leads round to correct this but I'm not sure which ones you swap!

Anyway, this is all academic until you get that piece out and make sure there is nothing else loose down there. Then fit another dizzy and see how it goes.

It's not the end of the world as long as you can get that piece out. As Baz suggests long nose pliers should do it, the bit that's left in looks like the end of the dizzy shaft. An electronic dizzy is a great idea but, as you were quite happy with the original, not essential. The missing screw has more than likely fallen into the base of the dizzy and caused it to seize up so hopefully nothing serious further down below. You will need to re-set the timing when you fit the new dizzy but it's straight forward enough. Have you got a pic of the bottom of the old one to confirm that it's the dizzy at fault.

You wont be able to remove that part by pulling it. Its conected to the oil pimp as thats where the dizzy gets its drive from. Its not an easy part to replace with the engine in the van as the sump has to come off and bolts in place from the bottom. You can also fit the mew part with the dizzy notch in the top of the tube in any place you slot it in. Which will put the ignotion timing out.Its also easy to put it in 180 deg out.If you have a read of the manual about replacing oil pumps you will se what i mean its very hard to explain and is not a very clever design. You need to get the engine at top dead centre when you fit it.;)

Jon,

Are you saying that to remove and fit a dizzy you need to remove the sump? Surely that broken bit is just the lower half of the dizzy shaft that engages with the 'dog' at the bottom?

Yes I'm seeing the whole picture now. You have unbolted the extension piece that the dizzy fits into and what you can see is the end of the oil pump drive gear[xx(]
It can be replaced with the engine in situ but it's a bit of a faff:I

No baz its not the part that has broken, its the centre shaft that is part of the oil pump is has two half moon shapes on the top which the dog on the dizzy slots into and these are the parts that have broken off.
You will find the bushes in your dizzy are proberbly worn so the centre shaft rocks from side to side, which has caused this to break.

If you look at the pic of my engine you can see there is a tube bit that bolts to the block with two half inch bolts and the dizzy clamp fits to this.

Ah! Having had another look at the photos I see what you mean now Jon. I didn't realise that the bit the dizzy fits into had also been removed.
