I've been trying to think of a way to change the diff ratio to 3.9 short of swapping the diff completely as i have fitted a 86 nissan L20B 2lt motor with an auto box.
My Question is is the original diff called a banyo diff and can you change the diff center for a more user friendly ratio.
With the size of the drum brake shoes and fitting a remote booster should stop the van quite well.

Yes it is a banjo type diff, but the tallest ratio available is the later spacevan one, 4.77 i think. So far there is no known direct replacement. A Rover P5 axle can be fitted with some work, which is 3.54. I think you would struggle to pull a 3.9 even with the 2L :)

The auto will still be 1:1 top gear, so it won't change anything. 3.9 is a pretty tall ratio for a van, unless you have well over 150 bhp to pull it :)

Depends on a few variables, like weight,wheel diameter,power etc, but you ought to be looking at 4.3 or maybe 4.1 max. If it's overgeared it will be horrible and sluggish [xx(]

Is there a calculation to marry up the correct diff ratio and motor/box/
tire size/ vehicle weight.
And is there a straight swap for the crown and pinion to change the ratio?

There is nothing that we know of other than the 3 available standard ratios :(
