I want to change my diff oil seal on a standard back axle (as far as i know) because it is leaking. I can't think why I didn't change it when I had the axle out.
I have here a 9102107 from Speedy Spares, which has a size marking embossed on it of 2.75 housing, 1.68 shaft, 0.50 thickness.
I have measured the components as 2.75 housing, 1.625 shaft, 0.50 thickness.
That makes the 9102107 the wrong size on the shaft by 1/16 inch, as confirmed when I try it out, the lip hardly makes contact on an unworn section of the sleeve. Not enough to work effectively.
I've checked with Speedys and they swear that they've been supplying those for years and never had any complaints.
So I've now ordered a seal from a bearing supplier which matches the component dimensions, but is only available in 0.375 thickness. No problem as it gives a range of fitting positions to avoid the wear groove.
I thought I'd check what is (badly)fitted at present, and that is a metric 70 housing, 40 shaft, 12 thickness. So that's too small and doesn't help at all. No wonder the shaft is worn!
Anyone know anything about this, or am I, as usual being far too pedantic?
I've also ordered a "Sturdi Sleeve" to pop on the shaft to repair the wear groove, but that's another matter. It still won't make the shaft big enough to use the 9102107
