Diesel Engine

Ok, have found another commer to look at in Surrey this week, don't know the full condition. Been told it's hand painted and just needs some TLC ;), well we will see.
Anyway have also been told that it is 1962 and diesel, did they come with diesel engine ?????
Thats it, once looked at i will hopefully have some pics.

hi matey if you do take a look and are not interested can i have the details as belive it or not im looking for a 62 a well for a potential customer. cheers mate. your nose must be more powerful than a dogs ,keep up the good work, your like the roving reporter.;):p

They're all creeping out of the wood work at the moment. As far as I'm aware, a '62 would have come with the diesel option as they did in later years. Expect to be V E R Y S L O W though.

Lol, thats why i asked, used to drive an escort mk3 van back when i was working on gearbox's for work, and that was as slow as a sticky sh*t on a hot day, god knows what a 62 diesel would be like. Dread to think.

The diesel motor fitted would have been a Perkins 4-99 (99 cubic inch, about 1620cc) and rated at 42bhp so very slow! I think around 1965 they fitted the much better (and quieter!) 4-107 and 4-108 series rated between 48-54 bhp the later engine will fit and spares are readily available, still a very popular engine with the boating community.

Phoned chap up today, arranged a time and headed off, got there just in time to see the back end of the Van on a trailer heading down the road, looked in nice nick. :( :( :(
The chap selling couldn't say sorry enough times, said it happened so fast, guy from down the road, stopped asked how much, went and got his trailer, payed and took it just as i was turning up.
The asking price £450. [:0] [:0]
Chap was the only owner, had hand painted parts of it where he had done work on it. Other than that it was all there and working.
so close yet so far [V]
Ah well the search continues.

Oh no that's tough[V] I had a similar experience a few years ago, there was a Riley RME just around the corner from me - it had been up the drive for a few years and a for sale sign appeared in the windscreen. After a days deliberating and a phone call to the seller I headed round half an hour later with the £500 he wanted for it.......and it was gone[V] - just missed it:I

Very bad luck mate. If that were me I would have felt so sick. Never mind, maybe it's meant to be and there's something better out there waiting for you.

Mmmmm and to add salt to the wounds on the way home i had drifted over the speed limit whilst in deep thought of if only i had been there 30mins earlier stuff and then FLASH FLASH, bl**dy speed camera.
If i had had a chainsaw in the car i'm telling ya that bl**dy camera would be in bits.

Me too[V] On me way to get petrol in the Mini just before I set off for the Cambridge meet - I was still on choke and the engine was racing a bit, didn't even have my foot on the accelerator and lo and behold a bobby with a camera hiding round the bend[V] 40 in a 30 zone - £60 and three points thank you very much[xx(]

I went round a bend into a 30 zone keeping up with the modern cars doing approx 40 [:0] (otherwise they overtake me [V] very dangerous too)
2 or 3 cars in front of me all got caught but I must of got away with it as the policeman looking through the camera appeared to take it away to see what on earth is that coming towards him lol I was in the Riley

I didn't realise until the letter came through a couple of weeks later, I thought I was doing about 35 on the speedo - and it reads high. I saw the camera at the last second as I looked up from fiddling with the choke and saw the guy looking at me - not through the camera. I guess he thought 'bloody road rally nutter' The thing is I've seen complete idiots blasting down the same road doing at least 70[:(!] I was probably a victim of a complaint from a resident:I
