de cambering rear springs

Has anyone on her had a go at decambering their rear springs ???
Following advice from here I was going to remove the full load springs but since it's a motorhome and will be loaded up for holidays I was wondering if I this wo be better giving thr correct ride height but still well sprung
Thanks

What are you trying to achieve?
Leaf springs dont have camber, did you mean to adjust the spring rate?

I just need a good rootes...

Ahh just had a google... Seems they mean to adjust the ride height and it is called decambering. Well you learns something new everyday!
Cheers.

If you flatten the camber, the spring will be too long and the shackle end will hit the chassis leg[B)]

Just wants to remove a leaf or two that aren't being used - I guess the q is would a fully loaded motorhome sit on the final leaf or two on the rears? I'd say probably, certainly over bumps and if they've never been replacedre-tempered.

its what i was planning to do, remove 2 of the 3 thick leaves from the bottom. Alternatively contact www.rooroadsprings.co.uk They may be able to help.

I sorted my garage into 4 piles of stuff.
1. Stuff I`m keeping
2. Stuff I`m not getting rid of.
3. Stuff I might use..one day.
4. Stuff that might come in handy.

What's the point? It's a proper camper, not a VW posebus!

Baz you old fart;)
I knew there was a reference somewhere to removing spring leaves. Dave Jones did it many years a go and his van look just right[8D]
He recommends removing (counting from the bottom) leaves 2 and four

This is Dave's van, the white one next to the blue and white Hi-top.

Cheers again guys awsome advice thanks loads
I really want to get my van on the road this year and get out and meet you in person at some shows but loads to do and working round looking after the kids etc around work is leaving little time [V]

Do just that then, never mind lowering, get the essentials done and get mobile - other stuff can wait;)

You don't need a Commer to attend the meets! Just Commer along in whatever you have.

Little bit of an old thread, once again I'm trying to lower the Commer 2-3" little without changing the tyres and losing rolling radius, certainly on the backend. Few reasons - it'll look better, handle bit better but mainly so it'll fit in the garage without having to take the pop top off every time :)
Don't want to flip the axle, weld\remove leafs so was back to this decamber\new spring thing. I've spoken to a spring specialist down the road who said if your happy with the ride quality he can easily rebuild and re-roll them to the new required height and pretty cheap at £40-£70 a side. He'll also make new coils for the same ride on the front based on bringing a current spring to him.

So question is - has anyone yet had the rears re-rolled, sounds too good to be true for the cost and much easier than messing a round with flipping etc.

While the van is in your nice warm garage measure the distance between the axle and the bump stop to give you an idea of how much clearance you will have once the spring has been re-profiled. You don't want to be riding on the bump stops, it would get a bit uncomfortable;)

It'd corner very flat on a smooth road :)

Will do that - think I may have to leave this one anyhow - Jo wants to go away at Easter, looking at essentials now - engine, gearbox diff and pop top for now unless he can do them quickly.
Thinking if I can drop the rear 2" I could take the other 2" from the front tyres maybe, if there's a suitable tyre out there.

An old standard saloon racers trick with Hillman Avengers was to grossly overload the back of the vehicle, then drive down a bumpy track till the back axle was bent. This lowered the car and also gave a smidge of negative camber. They did this because modifications weren't allowed, but damage was permitted. Looked cool too!
