D Type Overdrive Rebuild

Hello all

Following a chat with fellow van owner and imp fan Mike at the recent Imp national, I decided to investigate the reason that the Overdrive unit that I bought of Colin of Enigma fame (he must be on holiday as he hasn't been seen for a few days) along with a gearbox.

He had found that the overdrive engaged perfectly well, and then wouldn't disengage. He thought that it was something to do with the clutch cones. Well - he was right.

After practicing dismantling my spare triumph sourced overdrive, I found the overdrive soon comes apart. So, tonight I pulled the unit off the gearbox, and dismantled it. As you can see from the photos, the clutch cone and brake ring show signs of having been more than a little stuck together.

And this is a photo of the replacement clutch unit. As can be seen, the friction material is in much better condition than the item removed.

So, got to clean the brake ring in the blast cabinet to get it really clean, and then reassemble. It shouldn't be too difficult, only fitting the planet gears in place withing the clutch can take a bit of patience. Hopefully this will be fitted into Jog for the weekend after next.

Cheers

Andy

There you go, you were right. I am glad I got the courage to dismantle the overdrive. The spare I had from a Triumph has provided a nice clutch unit, and once it's all together - it should work fine. I am wondering if the problem has been some of the instant gasket that was used in its assembly, as there are traces of the orange in the main part of the overdrive unit by the pistons. It might have come loose and been sucked into the clutch. I shall be using something else to seal the overdrive back up - just in case!

Anyway, still have another spare from a sceptre, and I haven't had to pay a penny to do the repair - nice!

Glad to see this thread. More power to you for pulling it apart and having a go!
Perhaps someone can help. I have noticed the last couple of times I have been out in iceman that the over drive sometimes "slips" under heavy acceleration in third. It feels just like a clutch slipping, complete with slight juddering.
really hope it's not a major as REALLY don't wand to pull the box out AGAIN!
I'll start by checking and changing the oil. BTW I know it should be engine oil 20/50 or such but any particular type?
(sorry for the hijack)

Well...alright then, maybe just a little...

Hi Mike. Thanks for giving me the confidence to take it apart. It wasn't so difficult in the end, and you dont need any special tools to do a basic strip.

As far as the iceman problems, I'd have at the manual that I put the link for. There are some fault finding and diagnosis charts there that will give you the possible causes and solutions to your problem. It sounds to me like you have a similar problem with the clutch cones, as the overdrive is maintained by friction on the brake ring. Other than that it's going to be oil pressure related - either a low level or failing oil pump.

Good luck!
