Cylinder head off

I have decided that im going to get a kit and change all of the gaskets in my engine. Whilst im there im going to replace all the valves too. Can anyone recomend anything else worth doing or replacing whilst i have the cylinder head off please. Also will i need any specialist tools other than a torque wrench and valve spring compressor?

no tools needed :) its worth fitting some valve stem seals, mgb or pinto ones fit. if you can get it skimmed it will help.
replace all manifold studs/nuts with stainless if possible :)

You may not need to fit new valves but if you are why not see about getting an unleaded conversion done with hardened seats and valves.

Is getting it skimmed something my local garage type thing would be able to do and how do i go about getting it converted to unleaded as that is a good idea. What parts would i need and is that something i could do myself bearing in mind im no mechanic but love the challenge and learning, or is that a job for the pro's? Stainless nuts and bolts also very good idea. Cheers!!
 
Your local garage would send it to an engineering firm and put a mark-up on the price. Try the local Yellow Pages (Yell.com) for automotive engineers and do a bit of phoning around. Explain that you want an unleaded conversion and head skim - and for them to supply the bits - they should know what to do. If you have any problem then try the ads in mags like Practical Classics - they usually have that kind of service, but word of mouth is usually best - anyone else know of a good engineering company that could do the work.

The only additional cost will be valve seat inserts. The valves should be suitable for unleaded anyway - I dont think anyone has been selling valves not suitable for unleaded for a while now - obviously get new new ones not NOS

Hey guys, i have found someone who can skim it and convert it to unleaded for about 90 quid!! Im going to drop it off to him tomorow and should have it back not long after! Gaskets and bits are here also ready to go on, only thing is my manual only tells me which bolts and nuts to do up in order on the cylinder head to block, it doesnt say what torque to tighten them to. Can someone tell me please?
 
Hi Alex - 45 lb ft (6.2kg/m) Take them up in stages - cold and dry.

Wouldn't know - never touch the stuff:I - well maybe a shot at Christmas:)
