cutting out

When travelling back tonight in my commer she cut out a few times. It happened when i was coming to a junction, slowing down and depressing the clutch and the brake at the same time. I got a red light and then a yellow light aswell. Has anyone goy any ideas.

throttle dropping back too far?

not sure on the petrols, but the diesel has an idle setting screw as well as an anti stall screw that will overide the idle setting if required

or maybe its one of those new fangled commers with stop start technology.

it will help if you let us know what engine / carb combination you have - and does your fuel line run near anything hot?

I'm with Lee on this one, happened to Babs a few times, I found the throttle idle screw on the side of the carb had unwound itself a little bit, always seemed to happen exactly as you describe it, seemed to tick over ok but a drop in revs after running usually resulted in the engine cutting out. The two lights are warning lights for oil pressure and ignition live. They only come on because 1. the engine has stopped and as such the oil prssure drops and 2. the ignitions still on.:) try turning the screw up, (clockwise will increase engine idle speed). So with the engine idling, stop turning when the idle speed increases, only small ammounts though, no more than 1/4 turn then wait and listen. It'll sound right if that makes sense...

could be several things really......could be heat causing the problem - worth re-routing the fuel line away from 'hot' areas, i think originally the fuel line sits on top of the engine, get a longer fuel pipe and route it right round infront of the rad.....could be the idle jet in the carb is blocked with 'snakeskin' - take the top half of the carb off and blow the jets through with a bike pump with a football nozzle attached......if you havent got one already fit at least one in-line fuel filter...is the fuel pump working properly? - take the fuel pipe off the carb and crank the engine to see if fuel is pumping through? ....that''ll do to begin with:)

if it is just the idle screw then when it is set up right you can stick 1 drop of glue over it to help prevent it happening again. but dont use any more than 1 drop or you may never move it again

The engine is a 1725 petrol,i know the choke got stuck for a short while so could it of been to much fuel coming through? Not sure where the fuel line runs but will have a look.

worth checking the choke cable has a free run....on one of my vans the cable was too long and the end used to get caught when i closed the engine lid, preventing it from operating properly;)

When i travelled to my mates house(about6 miles) my commer was fine, my mate checked the gas for me and wired the fridge up ready to put a relay switch on next week. We were there for about 2 hours, then travelling back we had the engine cutting out. Where can i find the carb and the fuel wire.

now that you mention it enigma, the choke doesn`t always go back in. Thats what happened earlier, the choke got stuck out full so the engine was on full tickover.

I have just checked the wire from the choke and it seems to be free from any obstruction, but there is a wire that runs off the distributer cap that is broken at the end where it runs to. Enigma i confuse myself sometimes.

Ah....its ok....I'm no whizzkid when it comes to terminology....by 'wire' you mean cable regarding the choke!! ...

the ''wire'' coming from the distributor?? ...ok, is it like a very narrow tube??? like a drinking straw??

Right....then thats the vacuum pipe....it runs from the distributor to the carb and simply pushes on at both ends...(easily knocked off) ...if it's come unattached at either end then, that will defo be the problem...........Sorted:D:D[8D]

well ...where's it broken? as far as I remember its just a pretty soft rubber tube?

Hi enigma, its snapped off at the end before it goes onto a fitting on the carburetor. It could be glued back into placen or replaced if needed.

well if you going to glue it, make sure you don't cause a blockage in the tube with the glue....better off replacing it...

Is this a wind up??:D[}:)]:D

it`s no wind up, the tube at the one end has somehow split into two and come away from the fitting on the carburetor. Ithink it will be easily fixed.
