Cruising speed

So as a young un riding gun shot in many a commer van I never paid any attention to what speed the captain would be doing. As jimmy has no rev counter it's hard to know exactly whats what. so I was wondering what sort of long run cruising speed you guys ran at. Assuming your on the 1725cc 4 speed with overdrive set up

Depends on the incline and wind direction we have overdrive and 55-60 is normal straight road flat speed, although it could be slower/faster based on the speedo accuracy. borrowed a sat nab once and it reckoned 72 on the motorway. On hills with a head wind I would describe speed as slow

On a standard lump yes inclines and wind do have a big effect, have you got an SU conversion?

If you do ever go SU you will find a big difference, even better with decent exhaust and a good head skim:)

No I'm on a zenith carb with what looks like a universal flexi pipe exhaust. Obviously I've only just got on the road so I don't know what he will be like on a run but it's looking like I should be expecting to average 60 on the flat under normal conditions. As I'm an hgv driver that will do nicely :)

Just think that on a standard engine and box 65 is flat out - the OD will give you an extra 23% ish longer legs, so try 55 then OD on and see how that feels. But you really do need a few exrta torques to get the best out of the OD.

What's the hurry when you're in a camper? We plodded along at about 55mph on the way back from Inverness and just enjoyed the journey and the amazing view through the Cairngorms. Hardly any traffic on the road. Well, not in front of us anyway :)

Hmmm, Ive seen the giddy heights of 55 mph on Betsy-Annes speedo. Its a toss up which is worse, the engine revs or the fan at anything faster. Im thinking of having a thermostat fan set up and ditching the regular fan . But , im saving my pennies for the 6 speed gearbox from Tim:D Speaking of which, how does the 6 speed compare over the standard box ?

Howdy Art, for me a six speed is three gears too many.;)

Jim, a comfortable 40-45 (1725, iron head, 4-speed non-overdrive standard box ) in the Commer is a nice cruising speed:cool:

I will be going for my first jolly at the weekend we will see which one is the most comfortable as the speed increases, myself,my wife the three dogs or jimmy:eek:

[QUOTE="PaulJL,Predicted top speed 120+ but I wont be trying it lol.[/QUOTE]

I bet Evil will be trying it though.

Gladys does 70 no problem but Jim struggles to go over 60, Both have SU conversions, Gladys has over drive but Jim still got the standard 4 speed box although I have an overdrive box for Jim just need time to swop it.
