Has anyone heard of Evans waterless engine coolant? would love to see my temp gauge sit a little lower down the scale. This stuff is quite expensive at around 3-4 times the cost of antifreeze but not sure if it safe and effective or just a gimmick.
 
I saw it used in an episode of Wheeler Dealers. Ed explained its advantages, one of which is that it doesn't degrade or boil, so lasts for years and does not create steam pressure. You also have to purge the whole cooling system of all traces of water based coolant. However, if you are spending that sort of money, you don't want to waste any, so check the condition of all your hoses, radiator and core plugs.
 
Personally I think it's a gimmick, probable great stuff for certain industrial applications but if your gauge is reading higher than it should then there's something wrong. Your engine will still get hot with the Evans stuff it just wont boil and you will be masking an underlying problem.
 
Yeah read that part about getting all the water out of the system and it mentions a separate conditioner for this task. My temp gauge always sits at just over halfway and she has never overheated but it always concerns me how hot they run, then again I am a bit of a worrier.
 
Just keep it topped up with anti-freeze and it'll be fine. The problems start with long periods of being laid up with raw water in the system
 
Good idea. I strapped the thermometer attachment on my multimeter to the thermostat housing so I could check it on the run. There's just enough wire to sit the meter on the engine cover as you drive along.
 
Commer thermostats are set to 88oc...you can get 82oc ones cheap from Speedies...should see a good drop unless there's a big problem. It took mine from about 3mm under red line to always on half
