Commy the Commer

Hi everyone,

My partner and I have been van-camping (or freedom camping as it's known here) enthusiasts for quite some time now having spent many trips touring the South Island (of New Zealand) in our Nissan Largo more than a handful of times. New Zealand has a massive freedom camping (and house-trucking) community with the sight of a converted bus parked out the back of someone's house being a pretty common on the road. This created a pretty healthy case of 'van envy' and the search was on to find the most unique and coolest ride.

Then by chance we saw our first Commer 1500 (or similar). It was parked at a garage getting repaired of course. Instantly we were in love. It's cute little front, it's stubby profile. We wrote a little note for the owner to contact us if they were interested in selling to which the mechanic commented "I really don't think you want this one" with defeat written all over his face.

Sadly she wasn't for sale (or not really, the owner had taken to painting her with house paint?!) and the hunt began for our darling. Several months later we found 'Ruby' online. We of course forgot about the auction ending and missed out - or we thought. A buy now offer was put up and all we can say is that it was meant to be.

She's a '67 1500 apparently. I'm not sure if that's at all accurate based on what I've researched but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a local re-badging thingy. She's not similar to anything I've seen overseas - ie side door etc.

Rechristened 'Commy' with an eventual blood red paint job with a big black star and massive list of mods and additions planned hopefully in about a year we should have the ride of our dreams.

Hi!

Yeah thats a strange layout, but looks like it makes good use of the space. I know all about housepainted commers. The previous owners of Frodo did the same thing (In eyewatering Purple!). One of our jobs this winter is to strip him back down and paint him with something a little more suitable!

it even has a pocket in the side door for putting things. do you have any more frontal pics or any side shots. mmmm.please.;)

That is brilliant [8D]. It that a side panel adapted to fill in for the rear doors - really neat [^]

Sadly these are the only photos we have right now, we haven't actually seen her with our own eyes as yet. We're overseas for another month or so yet. An unkle picked it up for us and gave it the once over only finding some surface rust (yay). We know it's a swinging pop top so I'm guessing it's a dormobile maybe?
The layout won't last long. We really bought her for the base body etc with plans to make the side door a slider and a swinging (up) rear door and a vertical pop top both for storage and just our preference. Too many wild winds etc here for swinging doors. I could go on all day about plans, but I'll wait till I have something to show.

I've read a lot of talk about V8 Commers (which I'd do in a second if my partner would let me) but no 4WD Commers? Getting stuck on a 2 degree incline on wet grass is so embarrassing.

nice ride!

some nice features there, the side door is nice (it was standard on some working vans here), and I especially like the rear, very neat. Thats not a door at the back is it? You can carry bikes on the back really easily! And a full width rear bumper, never seen one of them before.

that poptop looks pretty small, I'd like to see a piccie of it up!

welcome to the Forum!

Welcome, great to hear from you - Commy looks great and really original - haven't seen a conversion like that, there are Dormobiles that follow similar lines but hope some of our more knowledgeable members will be able to recognise it for you.

Bet you're looking forward to getting some van camping done in this one[8D]

ooohh... could we do a commer swap? We can go to NZ and borrow Commy and you could come to Scotland and borrow Jessica?!

that would be fun!

Had my first taste of campers in NZ a couple of years ago and caught the bug! (Just aquired my first Commer). We bought on old Toyota Hiace and spend a couple of months touring (mainly the South Island) what a beautiful county.
