Commers in Melbourne

yes these are the two that were on ebay, when i first saw them i rang hi and made him and offer.

The "for sale" is the first one i bought....its in the front so many people come and aske me details about it..need to get that sign off.

Its not for sale. They decorate the front lawn and driveway.
 
Picked up Van No 3. No motor or Gearbox. So its easier to push around. It has the orange blinkers and the rust is not bad at all.

The windowed bus still does not have a running motor, its too cold at the moment. But maybe within a month it should be moving at least.

The most rusty Van runs, the not so rusty orange blinker one has no engine, and the bus is complete but needs engine work !!!

milk van sounds like an interesting idea, how rusty is rusty van? don't know what you need to cut away - think I remember Commerchris having some factory plans showing structural bracing point type stuff[?]

Wow! I can't believe it, did I see a Commer towing a Figaro??? Our two most favourite vehicles in the whole world in the same picture!!!:D:D:D

Rusty is the first post i put on, its the single white blinker van. Its rusty around the windscreen, inside peak, LHS rear inner and outer sill, and RHS outer sill. Its the worst of the three. But there dont seem to be many vans with the single white blinker, so i will keep it intact. I will play with the vans after the bus is on the road.

As a old mercedes collector i have many V8' engines, like a 6.9, 6.3, and 3.5. But the big blocks weigh 500kg and wont fit in the commers. Even the smaller 3.5V8 wont fit. Shame, cause i like the eights.

What are the most popular engine conversions for the commer vans ? and i dont want to put in a tubular chassis or re-build the whole chassis...
 
Tks for the flyer of a milk van, but i need more details to make it. I have not seen a current picture of a one, it must exist, surely all could not have been scrapped...
 
I went to Western Australia recently where there is a complete Avro Lancaster. For some strange reason i am fanatical in a nice way about this plane and to see it, sit inside it, go from one end to the other end and ponder being shot, left me silent in respect for those who piloted these machines..

there is a really spooky air museum at Easy Kirkby in Lincolnshire - they have a Lancaster bomber there which isn't flightworthy but taxis up and down the runway (if you pay lots of money you can be on board when it's moving) that sounds incredible. Museum spooky because it was an original serving wartime air base and all pretty much left after the last call - with crashed planes in amongst exhibits and the sound of footsteps coming up the hall in the control tower - goosebumpy stuff[|)]

Am secretly glad you don't want to chop Rusty - the PA vans are so lovely, and really rare here - and yours sounds to have similar rusty problems to most of the commers here in our soggy U.K. climate.

My parents live within sight of RAF Conningsby in Lincolnshire where the RAF Memorial Flight is based including the Lancaster. Whenever we hear the sound of the Merlin engines my Mum says 'it's allright, it's one of ours'. She lived on the Thames Estuary during the war along the flightpath of the German bombers on their way to London.
 
At the first Commer Gathering at Martins last year we were chatting away outside in the sunshine and we heared the unmistakable sound of those Merlins. A few seconds later a Lancaster flew overhead, really low - what a site [^].

I met a guy serving at a coffee shop and he saw i bought a book on the lancaster. He casually mentioned his father was a tail gunner and jumped when it was hit seconds before it blew up, wandered through germany for a week, became a pow and survived. He gave me his fathers hand written diary to read one day. What an amazing tale....

Back to Commers... I know where there is a TS3 commer diesel engine. In excellent working order.

Does anyone know how big these motors are ? Would they fit a commer engine bay without major surgery ?
 
lancasters are cool, i had to got to duxford and measure one up for making axle stands, and met an ex radio man who took me inside, its astounding how anybody actually got out of one in a hurry as there is no escape route. the bomb aimer has a hatch to drop out of and i think the tail gunner can rotate his turret and drop out but everybody else is in big trouble [:0]
also made stands for concorde, comet,tsr2,the civilian lancaster and jacking points for the p39 airacobra, which just so happened to fly over my house yesterday :p one of the perks of living 8 miles away [8D]. merlins do sound real sweet but griffons do sound better ;)

one of the campsites we stayed in regularly was close to Coningsby in the flight path and was amazing to have the Lancaster, Hurricanes and Spitfires fly over. Another is in Spridlington where the Red Arrows now practice - Lincolnshire seems to have an abundance of airfields - must be the flattest county in Britain:D

Back to TS3 engine - have seen and even printed a write up on it from the world wide interweb but can't remember where the heck I saw it - will have a rummage and see where it was:)

Hi commers of melbourne , Right whos the commer nut of e-bay that swindeled the adelaide commer from under my feet , nearly had a deal then he stopped responding and all trace of his sale and contact were gone and there was only one other respondent to his sale ,Come on on who's hording all the commers:(:)
