New Holbay engine has done around 1000 miles now. So should be run in. So I'm going to hook it out this weekend, take it apart and make sure its all bedding in properly. And see if I cant squeeze a few more horses out of it with a while I'm at it.

Thanks for that. But as its alloy its quite easy to work with hand files and I'm fairly used to alloy heads. I also have a peanuts budget:(

Just reporting back, as promised, as to how I got on removing the mechanical fan on our Highwayman, whilst leaving the electric one in place.

First test run was to a friend's wedding, towing a Vintage car on a trailer, good test I reckoned!

Engine runs smoother, performs better on hills and temperature gauge now shows a normal running temperature (before the needle barely got off the lower red section, now running in vertical position). Too short a run to determine if fuel consumption has improved due to warmer engine. Pleased with outcome, very many thnaks to Jules and Commerracer for the advice.

Mine have dropped significantly now I have got around to insulating the engine cover and new seal around the aperture. Wish I'd done it ages ago. Previously we had to yell at each other at anything above 70. Doesnt get so hot in the cab either.

Jules, I'm wondering how the past few months have gone post Holbay conversion and what turned up in any ongoing 'shake down' further to what's already been posted here.

You've mentioned the exhaust swap, did this later setup still use the Holbay 4 branch manifold and did you have any issues getting this to fit the Commer generally ?

We're planning to also swap in a Holbay and o/d gearbox to our Hunny very soon and are keen to pick up as many tips as possible ;)

I think that one must be faulty Tim - it's got a dirty great blockage in it.

DOH !!! Just remembered they're all like that as standard [:0][:0][:0]

Probably the best ever £100 I've spent on a car was to fit a K&N filter along with RC40 type /Panky design exhaust setup :p

Maybe a 'before and after' Commer transformation could be a possible event at the next Commer meet - subject to a willing volunteer ?

Looking good Jules [^] but keep a close eye on that header wrap, as it traps moisture and speeds up corrosion of the manifold ;)

Yes it does on the exhaust I agree, I only use it on manifolds which never get a chance to stay moist.

Our Holbay engine has just been dropped off with our ex-Rootes mechanic for its healthcheck - fingers crossed ...

4 branch manifold ready and waiting in our spare bedroom !

Now that Buttercup is finished http://66.129.69.181/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4567 I have been able to turn my commer attentions back to my own van. [8D]
Ive always find it slightly annoying erecting the kids tent outside the van in the dark, and lighting BBQs etc. But havent wanted to use the headlamps for fear of disturbing other campers. This is a fairly discreet light that can be mounted low down but puts out a reasonable 21W of halogen.
