Commerjules

Hi James
It may theretically be advantageous, but I am constrained by 1) available space in the engine "bay", 2) not having dyno test gear, but most of all 3) lack of know-how
And it may well be that my forced air induction doesn't add much anyway. I would have liked twin 40s in the 1st place (as these would match well to the race built Holbay unit) then I wouldn't be having to work out how to get as much out of the twin stombergs as possible - but there wasn't space for them either:(

But at least I got the improved 4 core rad back today, so should be able to get running again soon. I'll see if 4 cores is any better than the std 3

Cheers
Jules

It's a shame you couldn't make the meet - lots of conversation around your latest project :p would love to have spent some time shooting the breeze about Commers and mods[8D]

I was sad I could not get to the new Forest.
In the event the van was nowhere near ready.
But it was good to put a couple of faces to names at the NEC last week.

Have been fooling with the cooling system this week

New 4 core rad finally arrived

Going to couple it with a lovely chrome fan. I know a good source of fans if anyone needs one ;)

Also made a thermostat housing gasket with a stub pipe in order to get a source for my heating thing mentioned earlier in this thread

All seems to work Ok fitted.
fitted a 14" fan with thermostatic controller so shouldn't overcool.
I will also fit a manual override switch to the dash and warning light (just in case)

I also think that the brake light actuation design seems poor. So I fitted one to the pedal like sensible cars have. I'm quite please with this mod as it cost under a fiver, took 10 minutes and works well.

Very neat[^] As with all your jobs well worked out and expertly executed [8D]

Great mods, very sensible ones too. Blew my fuses when i accidently crushed the connections on the original b/light switch whilst working in the engine bay, took me a while to sus it :I
If you dont mind i may well pinch your idea for the brake light switch.[}:)][}:)]
I must try and get over to your emporium as i'm only just through the Dartford tunnel.;):p

back to my "rootes"

good work jules [^]. the brake light switch is a good mod, i did this on my a60 as it was a nightmare to get to the hydraulic one [V]

They usually only work out well after I have done, re-done, modified, started again from scratch, redone a few more times:( So I was pleased this one worked 1st time.

Below a pic of the forced induction sensor & bypass on the carb. This finally works well after rehashing several times. It now supplies enough gas to rev cleanly to 8850. (No I dont plan on running at that speed [:0] but its nice to know its capable) It didnt work so well before I fitted the electronic distributor but now the sparks can keep up too.

I also got a twin choke linkage sorted out, lifted from a Snag.

chokeknob.jpg

What an inconvenient place for the choke knob. I bet I leave it on and carbon up the plugs, so I built in a sensor and will wire in a dash warning light soon. I couldn't move the choke itself to the dash as then there would be too many curves in the line to operate properly. Anyone come out with a better solution?

In fact the dash is next on my agenda
What gauges have other people used? At 1st inspection the Commer dash looks easily modifiable, unless someone knows better. I dont really like the lack of an oil pressure gauge.

This grubby mess is, I'm ashamed to say, Harvey's. The extra gauges are a voltmeter, oil pressure and vacuum.

bling bling there mr Panky!

Kenlow fan eh? and a radio with cassette!

The early dash looks schweet with the extra dials. A later one has lots more room but less character in my mind...

Looks Good Panky
But has anyone inserted gauges into the dash itself?
I think I might be having to do this as I want to fit a rev counter anyway.
Anyone done this? Got a pic I can use as a rough templete? Please :):):)

here's a kinda pic of some of the extra gauge on Jessica's dash

IMG_3502-1.jpg

the Ammeter is fitted below the speedo on the main dash panel (an extra). There is room for the three small smiths gauges on the right hand side as well as the lights)

As far as getting the dash out, its 4 screws and out.... probably... The speedo cable and all the other wiring will cause a bit of a problem, buts its doable (I had the temperature gauge out over the summer)

Thanks BMM.
That pic confirms my sneaking suspicion that the mismatched warning lights on the dash were actually mismatched from the factory[:0]. As I have the same mismatches. Why didnt they buy all the same brand? What were they thinking of?
