Commer Walk Through

Hi guys this is not strictly on your topin , but i am currently restoring a classic tractor fe35 which has a non original block fitted to it , i have been told the block is from a commer walk though van , which has four glow plugs fitted to it . Does this sound correct if so does anyone know where i would source glow plugs to fit this.

Thanks in advance for any advice , suggestions or guidance.

welcome to forum, things have been quiet over weekend as a lot of regulars have been to a get-together.

My knowledge sadly not up to answering your question, hopefully some of the petrol (or should that be diesel) heads here will have an idea for you.

One possible source if you haven't tried them is speedy spares

They have an amazing knowledge of their stock so may be able to figure out what glow plugs you need from engine details.

Did you have any joy with speedys?, hopefully the more technical among us may have an idea about your plugs, if not (and more importantly if I remember) I'll ask fella with Walk Thru that I know that I hope to see next weekend at Vintage Show in Croeslan. If you are in the mid wales area at the time, I could recommend calling in as hundreds of vintage tractor owners showing (poor commentator runs out of things to say about little grey fergies after the first 30!) so a good chance of someone knowing where to get your glow plugs from. Details under 'welsh connection' thread under 'shows' part of forum.
 
Hi thanks for the info but still no luck as yet as do not even have a part number , as the plugs that are fitted to the head are in a very bad state. So any information would be useful

i've got a Perkins 4.236 in my Walk Thru, which doesn't have any glow plugs... just a diesel heater thingy on the manifold (which I took out anyway). i'm away at the moment, but will check out a manual when i get back to UK whcih has details on the 4.203 diesel engine... maybe you've got a Merc engine in there (whcih was fitted on some Walk Thru's)?
 
Hi thanks in advance for checking your manuals but i dont think its a merc engine , i am pretty sure its a perkins the engine does have an old heater plug in the air intake as well a 4 across the block just below the injectors.
 
Hi Nick, did some asking about engine and best guess seems to be that if it is a perkins then it was probably modified at some point as sounds like walk-thru perkins engine would only have had the one on air intake. Peeps I spoke to wondered if the engine had been a bad starter that the manifold was changed or block modified somehow to add the 4 glow plugs (apparently was common practice on massey ferguson engines) They did wonder if you could try using just with the one on the air intake and keep the 4 duds or something with right thread in the 'oles as blanks.

One friend who has a good knowledge on these things said that this is his guess but that may be some obscure perkins engines that are as yours appears - he is hopefully going to get me a contact number of someone he knows that is the sage amongst men on these engines so fingers crossed you will be able to find out.

One useful bit of info, sound like when you get it running it's going to go like a rocket[:0]:D[}:)]

Are you able to take original glow plug to agricultural dealer or good motor factor to find something with matching profile and thread?
Don't know how many variations there are on these things so this may be a daft suggestion, but I mean well :I

If you are able to get any photos of block, then would be happy to show them to my friend who may be able to identify engine for you.
Would be useful on here too if there are those with knowledge better than mine.

That engine is nearly as big as the one in the 'A' [:0]

By the way, for anyone that is interested, I failed to beat my personal best this weekend (14.1sec 102mph), only made 14.2-97mph [V] I put it down to using ordinary fuel, instead of high octane.
 
I was going to ask you have you got on, your personal best still marginally better than mine - 0-100 - 2 years so far and still waiting[:X]

Bet you still had an enjoyable weekend despite timings[^]
