Commer Virgin

Ive been looking at a campers for a while and since the VW's are now well overpriced, Ive been starting to look at commers. Im hoping that someone can answer a few basics:
1. do they or can (after mods) hold 2 seatbelted passengers (kids) in the back?
2. Do they tend to be unleaded?
3. what year does the reg have to be before its tax free?
4. Is build year different from registration year and is it the registration year that the tax is worked on not the build year?
5. Are they as 'easy' to maintain as VWs i.e. availability of parts etc?
Cheers

Hi Stuart and welcome.
There are previous posts about seatbelts in the rear, just use the search function. They are not unleaded, but unless you do a lot of miles, it is not worth converting them, as they run fine on modern fuels.
1972 is the tax cut off year, although some 73 campers are eligable, as they were manufactured pre 73 and were registered late. It goes on the build year.
They are fairly simple to maintain, spares availability is not as good, but getting better. Panels are being made by Woolfy on here (Coventry Commer Panels), other spares from Speedy spares or myself ;)

Forget the VWs, Stuart, and join the far madder Commer bunch ! :D

There's far more intelligence here on this forum than in the Secret Service (obviously, as they don't care about Commers very much [8D]), so always some help at hand. Which is a blessing ! And the community is growing.

And remember: the Commer is water cooled, so there's a nice heater there !
Which is more than the Volkswagen can muster [^]

Welcome into the mad house of chronic Commer disorder :)

Hi Stuart, Welcome- glad you found us :)

Very biased of course but think Commers a pretty sound investment as starting to attract a lot of folks who have given up on VW prices - and they are actually a more practical camper to use and turn more heads as a lot less of them around.

I've been running mine for 3 years full time without any mechanical trouble - and haven't been stuck for finding parts yet. Speedy Spares carry a lot of stuff & Martin has been a great help in finding bits I've needed. They have their running quirks but so do all classics:)

Hope you find all the info you need, any thing else just ask- we're always happy to encourage new mad folk:)
