Commer TS4 Engine

One of only 4 in existence, Commer TS4 engine. Supposed to replace the TS3 but was scrapped by Chrysler when they took over, as they already had a wagon engine in prodution in the USA.

It was unique that a heavy commercial vehicle company should design its own engine and the TS3 was nothing short of brilliant. I think Chrysler had already done a "deal" with Cummins in England and felt threatened by the TS4. It was a mistake by Chrysler and a great shame for the engineers at Rootes to scrap them as the Cummins wasnt that well received, here in Oz anyway. I think i read somewhere that the Cummins was not economic/reliable to operate.
There is still a few TS3's in use here albeit mostly on farms and used to haul water etc.

Thanks for the pics Martin, I didn't think any existed, at least some survived Chrysler.

I had an argument with a guy in a pub about the existence of 2 stroke diesels... He left still not believing me. I used to rebuild the ones fitted to AFV 430 series armoured personnel carriers. twin crank, 6 cylinders 12 pistons and a blower for good measure. These were smaller versions of the Cheiftain tank engines which were also used in double decker buses

I sorted my garage into 4 piles of stuff.
1. Stuff I`m keeping
2. Stuff I`m not getting rid of.
3. Stuff I might use..one day.
4. Stuff that might come in handy.

Fantastic engine way ahead of anything else in power/cc and fuel efficiency, tragically killed by Chrysler in order to favour a deal with the crappy Cummins [V]
