Commer Structural Strength

Hi all, was just testing the engineering knowledge on Commers and wondering if this would be possible...can you tell I've been in Bangkok where there are loads of these about selling booze. Early ideas to do something with a Commer but not sure it would be able to handle it structurally. Any thoughts...(and sorry about the pic - it's all getting a bit too VW round here lately :)

The strength of the van is mainly in the chassis (they were sold as chassis/cab to various convertors) so as long as this is sound I can't see any reason why not - it would look better than THAT:)

Does a coachbuilt commer have any extra bracing? If it has I'd be looking to add the bracing before chopping. If not then hack away

Nothing structural is added, the caravan body is just bolted to the load bed

There is very little structural strength in the roof, so this would be possible :)

Of course - never thought about the coachbuilts made of wood and ply...cheers guys just an early thought at the moment and yes would look much better (and bigger :)

Although the roof is not structural on the Commer, I believed that there were two structural roof members on the VW, which is why they could only have a silly little opening for a pop top.

So it does..my Auntie has runs a pizza company from the Citroen type vans, looks like one of theirs too. I quite fancy doing one of these and travelling Europe as a camper and selling coffee and booze on the way till the French police lock me upSpanish police shoot me :)

Last year we did a load of body strengthening work to a coachbuilt PB for a couple of guys who were converting it to a catering wagon. When we had finished it went to another specialist to have the cooking stuff installed. A coachbuilt was chosen so as they could stand up all over inside (which darksiders dont have the benefit of without the roof mods above [}:)]). I believe the plan was to have it ready for this summer's music festivals so hopefully someone will see it as they havent sent me any pics as yet. If I remember rightly the plan was veggie casseroles so pretty specialist grub from a specialist van :). We were recommended to them by Admin so maybe they are friends of his.

No wasn't this van, in fact we didnt do any painting this time just structural stuff. But if it had been thinners is quicker than photoshop ;)
