Commer project - engine conversion?

Hi, just signed up today. I've just got a '73 hi-top Commer project which has been sat for 6 years, with a busted engine. After dismantling the motor i've found that its pretty wasted - and was considering putting something completely different in it. Is there a popular conversion that people do? Perhaps a early sierra engine and box, or VW golf motor on the commer box?

The van came with loads of spares - alloy heads, twin carbs, another block etc etc. Not sure weather to try and mend the origional motor - or change it completely. Any ideas would be cool... Phil.

Hi Phil and welcome to the Madhouse :D- you seem madder than most so you will fit in well around here[}:)]
There have been several conversions the simplest being the Rapier (Me:I) conversion - some with a Holbay lump - to a couple of Vauxhall 1.8's, a Sierra auto and the crowning glory - Admins Rover V8:p:p:p
The only restriction is your imagination:)

and lets not forget Fontaines 2.0L pinto............................on second thoughts lets :D

welcome along Phil :) its entirely up to you and your ability/determination/finances etc. rover v8 is a good way to go ;)

Rover V8 sounds awesome to me!! Noticed that someone had put a fraud (ford) cologne V6 in one, sounds a bit more realistic and within my finances!
Would love to hear from who ever has done it, I've got loads of questions! I have a large workshop with welders, tools, etc etc. Its just the money I've got to be a bit carefull on as i have a few other projects on at the mo too.

Dozers old van had the ford v6. Do bear in mind that a rover v8 is more powerful and around 70lbs lighter. Cheap enough to get a runner too :)

The Holbay is an easy fit and will supply more power than your suspension can take. Go bigger and to use the power you'll need to redesign the hangframes and cart springs.

Cheers

Admin has a V8 in his van, look under readers rides, the engine is now in the back where the table would be!

Hey phil - got a Jag IRS at the rear. Everything is bolt in and out with sheathed holes through the chassis. There are a couple of custom "hangers" for the engine and gearbox, you should be able to see them on www.v8commer.co.uk/during.html

Nice van admin, thats the sort of crazy thing i need! Would the V8 not fit in the front where the old block would have been? I wanted to try keep mine as a camper - might be a bit cramped slepping with a engine!

I think it might fit - tim or martin way have already done the measurements. Mid engine made for a quicker conversion and better access to work on it. Also the handling may be a little better with the weight further back?
