Commer jumping out of gear

Hi All,

I have a 1968 Commer Motorhome and the problem is that underload(going up hills) it tends to jump out of gear. This doesn't happen on the flat or in any other gear.

Has anyone got any suggestions. I think maybe the selector shaft is worn as you can wiggle the gear lever around all over the place when it is in gear.

Thanks for that. Just to clarify, what are the dogs in the box?

If that is the case, then it will be going through a full restoration next year so I could do it then.

just realized that its not a dog box (too used to m/cycles) its probably the syncro rings which are in between the gears on the shafts :)

phew you had me worried there - if it is a dog box -they haven't been fed since I got the van - oh and I don't want to have to empty it! [:eek:)]

My van jumps out of 2nd gear if engine braking downhill - gives the passengers something to do on the steep twisty bits:D

The first reply saying the dogs are worn is probably correct.
The 'dogs' are more numerous and smaller in a road box than in a racing 'dog' box which have no syncromesh. On the back of each gear thare are small dogs that engage on the inside of the syncro hub once the syncro rings have matched the speed of the gear and shaft and then the syncro hub slides a bit further to engage on the 'dogs'.
If it is popping out of gear then the dogs are probably worn or it could also be that the forks and detents that push then hold the syncro hub in position are worn so it never fully engages in the first place.
You say the selector shaft is worn so I would start there and see if it is this that is causing a partial engagement.
