Commer Down Under

Hi All,We are well on our way now and have just crossed the Nullarbor Plain, 1200klm desert.
The Commer is going well with only some minor problems on the trip so far.[8D]

glad you're avoiding any fires etc. and that grill to protect the windscreen is brilliant!
 
Envious isn't the word!! This trip looks epic and so does the van, well done hope the rest of the trip goes without any problems :)

OOOHHH!! DEAR!!:I
After thousands of trouble free motoring miles our Commer ground to a halt today.
The diagnosis is the dreaded SNAKE SKIN in the fuel system.
Although blasting compressed air down the line from the fuel filter end cleared it and got us going again, i had to repeat that procedure about every 20 miles until we made camp and i pulled out the tank.
I have rinsed the tank out thouroughly and removed as much of it as possible.
But i know it will return and not looking forward to cleaning it out again as i have to remove my toe hitch assembly before i get the tank out.

So, Does anyone know what causes the stuff to peel off and any hints on a fix???.

It's the additives in modern petrol reacting with the painted lining of the tank (why did Rootes paint the inside[:(!])Swilling most of it out will help but the only real cure is a new tank:I
Saying that I've heard some people have success with tank sealer, might be worth a try.

One guy even put stones inside and rotated it in a cement mixer[:0] Once you get rid, it can't come back, but may take a while. That looks like too good a tank to throw away [B)]

Was going to suggest what martin said - stones or bolts etc in the tank and attached to a cement mixer, or anything that you have to automatically rotate it for a while!
 
I have had success with dropping the tank in at my rad shop and he put it in his costic tank for a few days and it came out clean as a whistle .I also gave a tank to a mob that does car bodies in a tank and that worked to ,but they are rarer than rad places
 
Thanks Thomo,;)We will be dropping anchor in Brisbane for a week or two soon so will get it sorted properly there. Until then will just have to keep cleaning it out when it blocks up again.:)

Tonking along nicely at the moment, not much grief from the tank last few days.
Believe it or not,, i am actually looking forward to our winter. We are in the north western NSW Opal fields and its 35'C here at the moment. We are going as far up as Brisbane then we are turning around and slowly heading back down to Melbourne and onto the ferry to Tasmania.
We will spend 12 weeks touring in Tas.. so i hope to post some pics of our Commer in some snow in the Tasmanian snow fields this winter.
I am well over the heat and am looking forward to having to turn the old girls brass heater tap on.
Anyway will keep you all posted on here and on our blog.
