Commer camper for 61 Beetle

All I can say is that you must have invested a lot of time and expense getting your car the way it is so you must be absolutely smitten by Commers to even think about parting with it - hats off to you:cool:

Thankyou. Yes its been a labour of love. I am smitten i think but i see buying a commer camper as a bit of an experience and it will change the way i do things and open up alot of avenues and things to do. Will be sad to see the beetle go but i cant sleep the family in it. Hopefully the right commer comes along.

I've kept quiet about owning a vw for fear of being linched however I feel now is the time to speak up! I owned a 72 bay about 10 years ago when they were actually affordable in very good condition and now own a 72 Commer diesel in useable condition ;) In my opinion in terms of drivability they are very similar( handling/ seating position) both seem reliable as long as there serviced like any vehicle and both receive positive attention( The Commer alittle more because of its rarity and literally sheer belief it's still around). From a practical point the interior layout works better for my family with the walk through as oppose to the vw however the pop top ( dormable conversion) had a great space for kids but was canvas where as the Commer are solid and resist the elements a lot better. The truth is there both great, let's face it vw are popular for a reason but if I had the choice... I wouldn't appreciate what I've got if I didn't have what I had.

To be fair i love most old cars but my family have always had fords and vws. I knew about commers and various other campers a while ago, bedfords, mk 1 transits, thames vans but always worried myself about parts availability and specialists who repair them something you dont really need to worry about with vws. This view sounds as though i was bit naieve from what ive read. I also found vw parts over the years quite reasonable. These days though a really good bay is 15k plus, a splitty 30k and even type 25 are up at 7 ish. I personally prefer the look of the commer, to all of the other vans. They are rare and different. Its good to be different. Im still learning lots about them as im a total novice but so far so good. Im hoping i can use it each day like all the classics ive owned, have some great trips away and bring another classic up to its best and give it my own touch. My grandad took me camping in his vans for years growing up. My turn to do it now. From what people say i think the commer is the way forward and its possible to use one as intended

image.jpeg Never a truer word said, this is a photo from a 600 mile round trip in my Commer this summer in ilfracoombeimage.jpeg and my family looking out!
I knew nothing about these vans, still don't in I'm honest but I love it, the family loves it and there's a great community out there, enough said :)
