just a little note about design/aerodynamics, I believe (I am kinda gullable) that the original split screen vw van was designed using a wind tunnel and had better aerodynamics than the beetle!

(sorry I mentioned the Darkside again [:0] )

:) yes i think you are right about that , i wonder how the commer would be in a wind tunnel pretty good me thinks , bit of turbulance around the wheel arches ,but that cant be helped, just a bit on the front windscreen peak though ,about the same time industrial design teams were brought in to help create a better more pleasing designs for a box like structure , one was a diesel loco trying there best to make it look atractive added a peak to the windsceen as in the commer thrown out at first saying it would collect snow /sleet and would be a danger , so to prove this they put it in the wind tunnel with a wood pulp spray like porridge and to there luck it just blew around the sides and no longer was it an issue , i wonder if at all any of the commer models were put in wind tunnels ? [?]:D

am thinking the CI motorhome might not fair that well aerodynamically - might even be more streamlined reversing.

The normal PB peak must catch the wind a bit judging by the amount of insects that get stuck up there, most of them survive the impact though so don't think high speed aerodynamics a worry:D;)[:eek:)]

Peaks were a bit of a design icon of the era. I remember many cars having an external bolt on peak, such as Ford Consuls, Morris Minors, Standard Vanguards. I even remember them fitted to the Bedford CA. The peak has made a bit of a return with the modern sporting hatchback, but at the other end! :)

Speaking of wind tunnels anyone know if it is true that the Austin Allegro was more aerodynamic going backwards than forwards ?

Also I was watching Top gear the otehr week and Clarkson was in a beautiful sports car from the 60's that was great until you reached 80 or so and then it started to take off.

Had some email correspondance with a collegue of mine at the main Vauxhall warehouse near Luton earlier in the week. And as I hadn't spoken to him for a month and a half, I told him that I'd recently bought a nice example of "Luton's finest" just to provoke him a bit ;) .. but he picked up on the subject and actually had some interesting info which I thought I'd better share with you all.

He told me that Commer Vehicles were situated in Dunstable on the opposite side of the road from themselves (Vauxhall plant), where they used to build the Bedford trucks. He also told me that the labour force actually used to go to and fro between Commer and Bedford depending who was paying the best hourly rate at that time. (Haha, did anyone mention "brand loyalty"? ) :D

The Bedford truck plant he referred to no longer exists (is now a trading estate with various shops), BUT he tells me that the Commer plant is still there (!!) - even though it now is a Renault Trucks site. I could hardly believe it ! :)
