Tim, even I know I'm an idiot ....Its not me that has a problem though:D ....heads up everyone....a fridge should be wired to work off the 'main' battery NOT the leissure battery whilst travelling:D

The way the split charger is wired on Debs (Moley) van "Brian" is as follows, once the main battery is charged up to 13.2V the split charger switches in and puts a 12V supply onto the fridge and also 12v on to the leisure battery from the alternator. Whilst the main battery maintains 13.2V the split charger stays switched on allowing the alternator to supply the fridge and charge the leisure battery. The coil is fed via a fuse and the ignition switch off the output from the alternator and what seems to happen on Brian is when the ignition is switched off to kill the engine the voltage spikes which is what I think blew the Sat Nav.
Deb also says that with the alternator feeding the split load, fridge and leisure battery Brians power was really down making hills more difficult than usual which points to the alternator struggling to supply the load caused by the leisure battery and the fridge along with providing power to the coil circuit which may be why the coils burnt out, less volts = more current to satisy the same load, more current = more heat.
With the split load disconnected engine power was returned to normal so Im gonna look at fitting a higher output alternator with a modern regulator. Trouble is this doesent explain Swampsters coil burning out as his split load relay was connected to his leisure battery but only the live was connected on the leisure battery so in effect the spilt load circuit was doing nothing.

Seems like you are drawing current away from the coil, so the spark is weaker. Ignition circuit should be totally independent of everything else :)

You want to sort that feed out to the coil like tim says they should be independent, sounds right dodgy we dont want Brian going up in flames.I bet the reg in the alternator is working overtime with the coil conected like that[:0]

The relay I fitted to Harvey simply takes a permanent live feed (fused) through the relay to the leisure battery, it charges it once the main battery is OK. There is a connection for the fridge but as mine isn't 12v I don't use it. About as simple as you can get and about a tenner from Towsure:I

The coil is fed just as Rootes intended, there is a seperate feed to the coil that is fused, this then goes via the ignition switch to the coil, the feed to the coil has to go through the ignition switch otherwise it would be permanently live and would burn out. Ive checked the wiring out and replaced loads of dodgy connections and taped joints, Ive installed extra fuses as one large fuse seemed to protect everything. I wouldnt want to suffer the wrath of Moley [xx(]if he did go up in smoke she loves that van:D:D

Did Brian have a dynamo from new? Has it been swapped to an alternator?
None of my vans seem to have there coil feed from the alternator just seems strange;)

I think Brian used to have a dynamo and has been converted to an alternator, the feed to the coil is taken from the large live battery connection on the starter solonoid which is also where the alternator output is connected to. This to me is the same as connecting the coil supply direct to the battery. Where is your coil feed taken from Jon

If you are interested read 'The tale of ten coils' in Readers Rides - My Ride Needs a Makeover- Clarabel blew up six coils ( must be a record!) before the problem of the fridge pulling too much current from the leisure circuit was diagnosed- ok now with fridge and 12v charging switched off. Still need to solve problem so fridge will work on the move. Hazels Dad
 
When ive got a spare 5mins I will take some pics, show you how ive done it and what im using its a caravan system ive got. Had no problems so far and ive done at least 10thou with it on the van;)

Its very simlar to this and has a take off for the fridge so only works 12v when engine running;)

This unit monitors the vehicles charging voltage and as the voltage rises due to the alternator charging the vehicles battery, the electronics within the split charger sense this voltage rise and connect the aux. battery automatically to the charging circuit. The advantage to this more modern approach is that the installer doesn't have to locate ignition or alternator feed cables. All that is required is a positive and a negative! The unit takes care of the rest automatically!
When the vehicles engine is stopped the split charger automatically disconnects the aux./leisure battery from the system to prevent discharge.

This is fitted to our Glendale an seems to have worked fine for years:)
May well be same/better/worse than Jon's example but declare I have no financial interest in mentioning it:D
Also, we just don't run the fridge whilst travelling, but switch to gas or 240V hook-up when stopped.
