coil Voltage???

Hi Guys,

I have a querie regarding the voltage of coils..
I believe the early commer vans have 12volt coils, and I'm wondering if anyone knows if mine: 1978 Dodge, is supposed to have a 9, 10, 0r 12volt coil???? Or if its supposed to be fitted with a ballast resistor????
I have recently had new points, compressors, dissy cap, leads and 12v coil, only to find, a few hundred miles down the road, myself causing chaos at traffic lights due to the van not firing up.
The cause is thought to be the new coil which was gettting really hot...??
any thoughts or knowledge on this greatly received....:)

Hi Nancy,Just had a look in the w/shop manual and the coil is a 12v non ballast type,so could well be the cause. Is yours in the normal place, bolted to the cylinder head by the rocker cover? I moved mine as i thought it was getting too hot,i put it on the drivers side wheel arch. I would think there is a lot of heat transferance from the head and also heat from the rad is detrimental to it staying at reasonable temperature.Hope this helps!

But I'm still confused as to why there was a problem with the new coil. I guess I'll just try and get hold of another one and cross my fingers...!!!!
 
Hi Nancy, sorry I can't be of help but I think I agree with Trev, my manual isn't as up to date as his but I don't think any radical changes such as ballast resistors ever came in - unless someone knows differently :I
