closing the doors soon.

right just so everyone knows and is on the same page, I thought I would put a posting up on here for everyone to see, and so people can read it for themselves . it is with great regret that I have finally decided to call it a day at Coventry commer panels, and will sadly not be undertaking any more restoration projects for people for the foreseeable future . sadly over the last several months I have noticed a large drop in sales of panels and orders or quotes for restoration work to be undertaken on peoples vans. I understand that there is a recession on, and I partly lay this to blame, as people are struggling up and down the country just to make ends meet, however I cant just lay the blame there. what also didn't help was the heated postings made by others several months back, which has damaged in my eyes what was once a good little business, since then things have never been the same. I currently have three vans in my workshop at present , and the owners of them know who they are. I can rest assure that these vans are being worked on as we speak and will be finished of accordingly over the next few months, I just wont be taking on anymore for now. im still going to remain a regular visitor to the commer van fan web site and will keep in touch with all my true friends that I have made over the last few years. its been a difficult decision to make for me, as I had put a lot of time money and effort into building the little business up, but if people don't recommend you any more and your not making any money from it there is no point in carrying on. lastly as you might well have already seen from the home page, my web site has been closed down by admin following my request to do so, this is in preparation to fad out the business. I wish things could have turned out better and I could have been successful , but its just not to be im afraid, and like one person said not so long ago on here, why try and compete against another firm if they offer more, you only lose in the end, well I guess I have! I will try my best, and post up some more pictures of the last few vans to roll out of the workshop over the next few months, starting with fonty in a weeks time, to show how good we really were at one time, turning out really nice vans. I wont be closing my doors completely on my workshop, im just moving on shall we say to pastures new , and trying a different avenue for a while. if anyone has any comments or would like to find out more about the closure of the commer section, feel free to give me a call anytime on 07968634055.and I will gladly talk openly about it. on another subject if anyone is interested in buying the business as a going concern and thinks they can make it a success once again, feel free to call and make an offer, you never know?:(;):p

Managed to save a number of vans, but if it doesn't pay the bills it becomes a hobby!

This is bad news not only for you Woolfy but for all those who value your services and you will leave a gaping hole in the Commer restoration map. It's tough out there for guys like you who put their heart and soul into something for ever diminishing returns but you are not alone, maybe the fact that we seem to be having a decent summer will encourage people to commission work on their vans and work will start to flow in your direction - please don't burn all your bridges just yet. On a positive note you still have three vans in your shop to keep you ticking over for a while.
Best of luck whatever the future holds for you.

Summer's Coming

All the best for the future Woolfy, loved seeing the vans you've turned out. Look proper high quality restos

Hasta la supervista baby

Woolfy, how about a change of direction, There seems to be a big demand for Morris travellers and there also seems to be loads of old tatty ones that someone with your know how would be quite capable of restoring. I don`t think they would take as much work or layout to do up as a commer and they have a far bigger market.

^^^^^ I think Lulu might have a moggy that needs doing

I feel your pain Woolfy mate I've just moved my restoration/body repair business closer to home to cut down on the fuel cost, which it turns out was my biggest expenditure.
I'm fortunate tho as I take in regular work from motor traders and the public as my "bread and butter" and I need it to pay the bills.
Is that not some thing you could do bumper corners and wheel paints soon and up I know its not "nice" work and I'm not too keen on it myself but needs must
I also "flip" the odd car now and then which keeps the workshop looking busy and can be useful for the vat bill .........
Good luck with it all
Mark

Hi Mark You`re not far off about the moggie, I don`t have one yet but I`m looking and I know that I`m not the only one on this forum who fancies a moggie. I even went to Blackpool to have a gander at one, it looked beautiful from the top but my mate ,who`s a retired mechanic went underneath and found a hole in the body, so that was it. There is a firm not too far from me at Halifax, who renovates them but as Woolfy seems to do a good job I thought it might be right up his street.

like I said im not going away for good, im just moving away from the commers, as they just seem to take too long to do, as they are awkward, and theres a lot involved in restoring one.and even when you do finish one the rewards are just not enough to make it worth while.ive even tried doing a few smaller cars etc along side doing the commers, but then I found that, you had to stop work for a few days or weeks on the commers in order to get the cars done, which in the meantime the owners start complaining about progress etc.id rather just buy a few old classics of my own, and restore them at my own leasure , then sell them on afterwards ,and try to make a few quid.:(:p

There`s probably a bigger market for classic cars than there is for commers and like you say, they don`t take as much time to do as a commer, I know that with lulu being at Mr M`s for over 2 years and not finished yet. A think a moggie traveller wouldn`t take anywhere near as long and the market is bigger. I know it`s not a nice thing to say and I promise that I`ll wash my mouth out with soap but have you considered doing old V dubs as that market seems to be on the increase.

go for something with a decent market and readily available panels, Moggies, Minis, MGs, TRs, Heralds. .......

I am not a person, I am a number, 395 actually......Be seeing you!
If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

Its been a bad year sofar for the classic motor trade generally I think. My workshop was so quiet earlier in the year I even had time to make some progress on my own van :I

I have been after parts and the only reason I didn't try Coventry commer panels is that I had thought you had already stopped. If I had known I would have been in touch, you are quite local. Sorry to hear you are knocking it on the head.
