Commer PA/PB and Spacevan values are shooting up, driven by demand as Volkswagen Type 2 wannabe-owners turn to a British alternative.
Like the Volkswagen, the Commer used a lot of car components from Rootes' empire, which means upgrades are not too tricky to effect. That's was like it's Germanic rival, the Commer is a little pedestrian by modern standards – especially the 41bhp diesel.
John Field, who runs the Commer Van Fan website has been all too aware of the rise in values. “When I started the club in 2005 it was fairly easy to get an MoT’d van that required a little work for under £2000,” said John.
“Now, you’ll pay £3500, with one in good condition commanding up to £7000. Commercials fetch a bit less, with pop-top campers the most popular.”
The Commer PA was launched in 1960, with the PB taking over in 1967. The Spacevan moniker was applied from 1974, but is often used to refer to the entire series of these vans. The Dodge marque was used from 1976, but the last Spacevan was not produced until February 1983, with the Post Office and British Telecom amassing huge fleets.
With a vibrant club and good parts support, there's certainly a lot to recommend for the Spacevan. Many are improving their vehicles, with V6 and V8 conversions out there, though many opt to improve the original engine's performance using bolt-on goodies from the Rootes saloon range.
