Carburettor options

Anyont tried these on there commer? Would they work?
They would look the biz[8D]:D

A commer down under - or down under a commer?

Very doable mate have a look at Commerjules's thread here and see for yourself what it looks like;-)

The Bush Pig has contracted Pig Flu!

they will fit ok but they are really a poor copy of S.U carbs, which are far better :)

I couldn't have put it better myself!

If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?
I'M GETTING A HIGHWAYMAN !!!

Is there a twin carb manifold that will fit the iron head, I thought they only suited the ally one[?]

Trahh la laaa - Harvey's around here somewhere

Quite correct Panky, I should have said they can be made to fit :I

So what is the difference between the ali and iron head then? aside from weight, looks, performance, cost.......!
Is there much to the alteration? I have an iron head with 2mm shaved off and these are defo from a ali headed hunter engine.
SUs are available here but are sought after by the boyracer lot for toyotas or something daft.
I guessed that they are a rough copy of the SU but are they really poor? worse than a single knackered Zenith?
Had a peek at that thread comm-don and they look nice and seem to be something of a natural fit in the engine bay.

A commer down under - or down under a commer?

They are certainly an improvement on a zenith [xx(]
the difference between iron/ali heads is the port centres are radically different, compare manifold gaskets for the two and its easy to see ;)
the other problem is the iron manifolds bolt together, so you have to change both inlet/exhaust. this is why i do the s.u manifold conversion, which keeps the std manifolds but has a sidedraught 1 3/4" s.u and also seperates the two manifolds dramatically reducing the heat input into the inlet, which increases charge density and torque :)

Tim how much are the manifolds to get to an SU and how do you get around the travel difference of the commer throttle cable and the sweep of the SU accelerator link rod[?][?]

Im all thats left of a bizaar childhood!

One of these i can do for £75 + p+p

you will need to have the exhaust manifold done as well which will be £40 +p+p.

Not sure what you mean about the link rod Nath [?]
I can,t remember if Sybhil used the std cable or i fitted a different one, i will check, but i am pretty sure the std one fits if the carb has the linkage on the left side, but if needed can probably supply a suitable one f.o.c
you also need to make a simple bracket to take the cables, or i can do that too if your stuck ;)

i can do all the fab work, on my commer the throttle cable travel from rest to full throttle moves approx 2 inches but the throttle link bar that the cable attaches to, needs to move more like three in order to open the butterfly fully , this is the problem that i am having at the mo with charlie as someone has fitted a different carb and im only getting half throttle.[xx(]

I get your drift Nath, we had a similar problem with Fontaine [xx(]
no problem at all with sybhil. its all to do with leverage ratios and pivot point/arm lengths. If you can move the cable attachment point (on the carb) closer to its pivot point it will help :)

yeh i was thinking that and did all me measurements then played at my work desk with lolly sticks to get right length (got funny looks from work colleagues) but its one of them nasty strombergs and would much prefer a nice shiny SU that im so much more familiar with, so may be in touch for a manifold after christmas. Thanks for your help tim [8D];)

looks like the lolly stick CAD was right then ;) your problem is the stromberg [xx(]
oh, these manifolds are on an exchange basis as well :)

tim - any joy with the quad bike carb manifold? i've been getting so depressed trying to replace the bottom 6 inches of solid body filler on my alpine that i might do some work on the van to cheer myself up.

Hi Sam :) its been a while, some progress to report (its half done) a bit held up now due to big workshop move and the need to get another milling machine :I but you are on the high priority list ;)
