Carbs for alloy head engine

I am in the process of building up an engine for my super minx. I can finish it either as an alloy head or cast iron head, and my preference is for the former. I have a choice of carbs to go on it, either a solex twin choke b.32 carb, a pair of zenith carbs as fitted to the mk1 sceptre and alpines, or I could make something else.

The alternative options are to fit an SU, but the manifold is quite wide, and I am not sure I will get an SU on there with enough clearance, or to go for a Weber 32/36 DGA. My preference is leaning towards the weber as they are still made new, and jets are easy to source, and it should fit straight onto the alloy manifold I have.

Can anyone offer me advice based on their experience? Budget is tight!

I believe the TC Solex was problematical from day one and Rootes offered an exchange for a Weber. The twin Zeniths seem very old fashioned as a single one is bad enough. Personally I'd go for a single 1 3/4" SU for power and economy - failing that the Weber.

Hi Andy, I tried very hard to get the Solex to work on the Commer, but it was rubbish even after a complete re-build. I have no experience with Zenith, however I sent the alloy manifold off to Tim who made the mod for the SU. Although the unit ends up quite wide, it fitted in the engine bay just fine. The Commer runs very nicely, just ask Baz!
I hope this helps a little:)

Hi Andy, I'm no expert, but IMHO, twin 40 or 45 DCOE Webers could be interesting, but I realise that your buget is tight.

Failing that, the Weber DGA 32/36 may well be an excellent choice for performance and economy.

Failing that, you could always fit a Ford carb., as fitted to my Commer;)

In my opinion for what it's worth (not a lot) lol ...I'd go with twin Webers:) or like the other Colin said get an SU conversion from Tim[8D]

Hi guys.

I don't particularly want to go for the high end set up of twin webers, I want reasonable economy and hot performance isn't the priority. I think I will start with a weber and see how that goes. Second hand DGAs are quite cheap and they should fit straight on to the manifold, and leave just the linkage to sort out.

Colin, I looked at the manifold that Tim did for you, but it looks more like a cast iron manifold? The alloy head has the valves swapped over for 2 and 3 in comparison with the cast iron head??? I have manifolds for the solex tc and the twin zeniths, but neither of them look like your manifold.

However, the 6 speed box is looking interesting!

Andy? which Colin are you talking to?

IF you mean my manifold, then yes it's a cast one..;)
