carb question

hi, I have done a silly thing, while i had my manifold off to skim and re pain it got a gasket kit and decided to clean my zenith carb,
can you guess where this is going!! my service manual covers every carb known to man but the zenith, it all went back to gether fine and today i started the engine (eventually) the thing is behaving like it is flooding, it will run lumpy with the trottle half open revving, or with run fine for about 20seconds with the fuel pipe disconnected, so i have spent all day messing with the floats, but no change, does anyone know what the mesurement is for them? and where to mesure from? or if you know where the problem may be comming from? the valve seems ok but when the floats are ajusted stupidly low the engine cuts out but anything like normal hight and it is flooding. i am certain i havent left a jet out..

stripdown spec sheet anyone?

thanks

Ian

Hi Ian,
Things a bit quieter over the weekend for some mysterious reason;)
I have a workshop manual which I'll have a flick through in case it covers what you need, but possibly just have what you have already. Some of the petrol heads remain so may be able to help but otherwise you may get more joy next week:)

Excerpt from the manual:-

'To check the fuel level remove the carb top body and invert it so that the float holds the float needle on its seat. In this position the highest point of the float should be 1.26 / 1.3 inches (32 / 33mm) from the gasket face.
If necessary bend the float arm, or tag on the float arm as needed, or fit a thinner or thicker washer under the needle valve seating.'

Hope this helps.

I have a service bulletin for Zenith S1V. It is 8 pages long and very small writing, I can send you a copy, if you want.
The section on level reads;

'This is set at the factory 15.5mm down from the top edge of the float chamber. It should be explained that this level is that which should result when the top half carrying the float is in a position on the carburettor and the float is holding the needle closed against the pressure of the petrol in the fuel line. When the top half is taken off and the float is lifted out of the chamber the level will fall.

To check the level remove the top half and leaving the float in position reverse the cover so that the float arm closes the needle then measure from the face of the gasket to the highest point of the float which should be 32mm to 33mm for rubber float and 30.5mm to 31.5mm for nylon float.

The level can be altered by bending carefully the tag on the float arm that contacts the end of the needle or an easier method is vary the thickness of the washer under the needle's seating. A thicker or additional washer lowers the level.'

Good luck

Panky beat me to it, but mine is the full version ;)

hurrah!!!!

i found a reference to the carb in the background of an argentinian landrover website and it 33mm but the translation was a bit iffy and i wasnt sure to trust it, but now i know for definate, excellent it is that good i am going out now into the 4deg c in the dark to check mine!!!!

THANK YOU

ian

Nowt wrong with a good old ferret, it's just that I have my dog eared manual under the sideboard that we use a puter stand :D You never know when you might need it:)

Amazin' what tinternet throws up, not physically you understand as puters can't actually vomit but literally. I didn't realise there were still pockets of native Indians in Argentina, that bloke stripping the carb appears to be under attack from a hoard of bow and arrow wielding natives [:0]
