hi need some help before i go mad.
i've just changed the gasket on my zenith carb and now when i accelerate i get a pause and almost a sucking sound before it actually accelerates, could this be sucking in air i have no clue and its got to get me to newquay in a weeks time so HELP!!

no it wasnt there before, i took the carb of originally to tighten up the 4 screws underneath, but i thought while i've got it off i'll change the gasket because the other one was nearly in bits anyway. i had a friend do it because i have no idea i'm still learning so i'm not sure whether he played around with anything else which may have caused the problem.

Check that the accelerator pump linkage hasn't come away, it's a short rod that connects two cranks, one near the bottom of the carb and one near the top. To test if the pump is working first take the air filter off and remove the bend that joins it to the top of the carb so you can look straight down the throat, then operate the accelerator - you should see a little jet of fuel squirt into the throat of the carb each time you hit the accelerator.
Or it could be that some of the old gasket is still there, creating a gap and drawing in air, try running the engine and squirt some WD40 or similar around where the carb is bolted on if there is a leak you should be able to hear the WD being sucked in - and the exhaust will smoke.

I don't mate, i live just outside Stamford HAHAHAHAHAHA. I wished i did live in Thailand though as indeed it is wicked, and my fave place on Earth.

Are you getting a clean jet of fuel into the carb?

Are you sure nothing has been trapped between the carb and the manifold when it was tightened down and is the carb pulled down evenly on the studs. It certainly sounds like there is air being drawn in and, as it was fine before, logic says it must be something that has been introduced since. I wonder if the float is stuck and is not letting enough petrol through - give the side of the carb a few sharp taps with the handle of a screw driver.
Another thing to try, in case the is a blocked jet, is to remove the air cleaner and start the engine. Give it a good rev and put the palm of your hand over the top of the carb - the suction will pull you hand on strongly but pull it away before the engine dies. Repeat a few times to see if anything clears, don't be shy with the revs.
