Carb is still dead

Hi

Since the previous post I have bought a land rover service kit for my zenith carb, obviously i didn't use the jets but I wanted to replace the needle valve, i have now put it together and it has the same problem, essentially it is like the choke is permanently on, I have taken it apart and put it back together over 10 times now and allways the same problem, I have varied the float height and blown out the airways with compressed air but still it is getting too much fuel.

so my question is does any one know where I can get a new carb from or know of a webber etc that will fit and work? or do you know what i have done wrong?

thank you

Ian

Hi just a quick update to say that I have finally sorted the commer (i think) the new carb would tick over but not rev at all :( but after a day of tinkering I have transposed and cleaned all of the jets into my old carb and after a fashion it worked!!! so I set off to bring the camper back home and within 1/2 a mile it broke down, with not enough fuel in the pipe, after 4 breakdowns and 1 jumpstart I have it home and i am confident the fuel pump is bust!
today was the day that i was going to decide weather to throw out history and fit a vauxhall in it, if the carb didnt work then new engine if it worked then I would coninue with the old engine. does 4 breakdowns in 1 mile count as working>?
I like the thought of a fuel efficient engine but getting a new exhaust manifold and new universal joint made up sounds expensive. also mine is an auto so i dont suppose all my speedo and gauges would work right compared to modern ones.
to make matters worse a branch was rubbing against the bodywork and now I have a lovely hole where it was.

never mind I like fiberglassing. it is relaxing, almost as relaxing as my day with the commer!!!

The Vauxhall option would be more efficient but how much petrol would you have to buy to claw back the expense of the transplant. If the van is not going to be your every day vehicle I'd stick with the original, fit a new fuel pump (maybe an electric one) and see if you can live with the leisurely progress. If not just remember it's a big old coachbuilt and was never meant to do 90 mph [:0], good luck in what ever you decide.

ahh panky does this mean i wont be able to get our block of flats upto 145 mph on the A30 to newquay this summer using some pig pee chip fat and radio controlled car fuel (that stuffs flammable!!!) you really know how to ruin someones xmas although i wasnt looking forward to harvesting the pig pee;)

Sorry about that, slipped into serious mode for a second :I
Pig pee, castor oil and nitro-methane - a highly volatile concoction. The chassis might do 145 but the anything above the ground floor wont [:0]

Mmmm I've still got a couple of gallons of model fuel in the garage [}:)]

I might be able to manage to get to newquay, it is only about 20 miles away that is only 80 breakdowns,
not fussed about speed I am only interested in reliably and fuel, if i don't sort the engine then the camper is in danger of being left to rot. It takes all the fun out of going away if you hold up the traffic get covered in petrol and oil and pay £100 in petrol before you arrive at your chosen spot when the rubbish volvo would have done it in 60min on £30.

I had a boat once that broke down because of a loose bolt on the alternator, but after that we lost confidence in it and ended up only going up and down the river scared to go out to sea (even with all the kit and a spare outboard) so the fun dwindled away while we drove up and down the same bit of the river listening to the engine knocking wondering if it was another bolt about to fall out and leave us stranded. the boat has now been sold and alot of money wasted, a shame because it was so fun in the days of ignorance when we first had it.

the worrying thing is I have started to hear more strange big end tappet timing chain noises coming from the commer than I used to and my next journey will be close to home incase it dies on me again, a familiar pattern is forming.

at least with the boat I knew definalty that the alternator belt came loose unlike the commer.

supposed to be fun isnt it?

ps. anyone know how much it costs to have the exhaust manifold made up for the conversion. any other engines good for it (any diesel automatic 1/2 install and 60+ to the gallon would be good!) would a 1.6-1.8ltr cavalier be better mpg? or too underpowered ? (long ps!)

i must do my samaritans bit here mr cornishcommer cos we are still in the process of trying to obtain an mot on charlie and its been a bitch of a time but we are nearly there with just a few easy dry day jobs to do, but i organised the tewkesbury meet and didnt have an mot or tax so used trade plates to get him to the meet and had such a great wkend that all the late nights and hammered fingers were all forgotten, stick with it, it will be worth it and your amongst great friends on this ere forum
