can anyone help??

First of all, sorry it's nothing to do with Commers:I:I

Its my diesel Renault Traffic:I

For ages I have had a problem which I think may be an injector?
It will run perfect for a while then other times it will go lumpy or not start at all... it's almost like the jets are getting blocked with snakeskin in Commer language...

There is black fuel pipe that links the injectors and I have temp put clear pipe in its place to try and see whats happening..
Today it refused to start and I found there to be a couple of tiny air bubbles between the 2nd and 3rd injector, I played around moving the air around and it started straight away?

My theory is that this would incriminate the 3rd injector as getting blocked??

Please anyone have some thoughts on this??

Summer's here.....
Told you

First of all, when did you last change the fuel filter [?] normally a prime suspect with diesels [xx(] but it sounds like you have a tiny air leak somewhere in the fuel lines or a seal, all you can do is go over them very carefully checking for tiny cracks /pinholes or even replace.
Check tightness of all the clips/unions too :)

"You,re only supposed to blow the bloody SLIDING doors off"

Looks like the high pressure fuel pumps on its way out col like i said before on other post its a common fault. The button moon milage yours has done must be about time, they start to break up inside check fuel filter for metal particles. Be carefull what your doing on the high pressure side of the diesel system as its a commmon rail set up on it and works at 1600bar the fuel would be that fine in the air you may not see it and end up penatrating your skin. Injectors are also common along with gearboxes, turbos, egr valves etc but an injector fault would affect the running aswell as the starting usually.[V][V];)

Thanks guys.....

Tim, the filter was changed about 7k ago and yeah I have looked carefully for leaks, but will look again..

Jon, yeah I remember you saying so before....it does also happen when its running, it will cough and splutter when the revs are low but not all the time, just occassionly, other times it runs like a dream...I know the pumps are really expensive and was kind of hoping you would steer me towards it being an injector problem.
I was running on cheap Tesco fuel and now several people have strongly reccommended not to use it as the cost cutting means less essential chemicals which add to problems...

If I choose to go down the route of changing an injector first, can you give any tips on the best way to avoid breaking it off in the head as I've heard this is also a common problem?

Hi Colin,

Getting the injectors loose from these heads - I understand - is a right pig. Most of the time, I think the garages end up damaging the heads when trying to get these injectors off - at least if our reported warranty and goodwill costs are anything to go by. We've also had major trouble for the last half year or so getting exchange heads from the supplier (for Opel) due to shortage of cores. That tells me that the risk of damaging the head properly is substantial. I hear conversations on this issue almost daily in my office.. so, yes, be careful.

As far as I know, removal of these injectors is mostly just possible by means of a vibrating tool (I don't think that even the special tool from Renault/GM is up to the job most of the time, to be frank). I know that a few of our Opel dealers have invested in this sort of vibrating tool equipment, and it seems to do the job. It may be worth making a round of phone calls and check if garages do have such tool, and how much they will charge for replacing the injector. Just bear in mind that the price of the injectors themselves can be pretty steep, and you could be facing replacement of more than one too - if indeed this really is the problem on your vehicle. My advice would be to check it properly/get it checked properly, as I know that the costs involved with injector changes (mostly all four) are substantial. If the head gets damaged in the process, the cost will inflate even further.

All the best of luck. Hope it goes well in the end :)

First and fpremost Jostein, may I say how nice it is to hear from you:)...how the devil are you and your lovely family??

I have sourced injectors at £120 each with £15 refundable on the old ones so yeah I'm aware of the expense....

Obviously I wish to make this as economical as possible but having said that, if I have to fork out then I did get the van very cheap to begin with...

Any thoughts on getting a complete Head, inc injectors from a breakers??...or indeed a high pressure pump?

I'm assuming that this kind of fault would not show up on a 'diagnostic' machine.....I would of thought that as this problem is intermittent, the machine would not pick it up?

Have you had a code reader on it col? First port of call check the fault codes. There may be loads in there so write them down delete them and see what code comes back first. There will be codes in there dont think ive ever pluged a renault in and not seen at least a few:D

Hey Jon mate:)

Not recently but once before whilst having this problem I did and it showed nothing up? ....I take it that having or not having a warning light on the dash stands for nothing then?

You know, when I left school I wanted to be a mechanic and didn't pursue it...so wish I did lol:D

No warning light means nothing. There are two ways of code reading to. One way is EOBD codes which are a standard set of codes that will only show you emissions based faults. Two is maufactures data which goes alot deeper and gives you propper renault codes as the dealer one would. Your cheap argos specials code readers will mostly only give you EOBD faults so comes back no fault found most the time depending on what the fault is.;)
