Camshaft removal and replacement...

Just wondering has anyone done this whilst the engine is in situ? Looking through the manual I have for a Hunter (what’s in mine) it only says ‘it’s so rare to swap a cam that we’ll not go through it’ and it proceeds to full engine strip down. I guess the question is, what’s involved in just taking out a cam and putting a different one in? Does the sump, oil pump etc, need to come out or can a new one just slide back in? Reason being looking at a GT cam for a little more power whilst I play around with a spare head and do the Vizzard mod. I can’t be arsed to take too much bottom end a part or pull the engine out and would just do the head swap if the cam is a big job it’s only 2-3 hours work.

Once the head is off you will need to take the dizzy out, drop the sump to take the oil pump out as it's driven off the cam, then tappet cover off to pull out the cam followers (try this first in case they only drop out from below), radiator out, timing gear off and it should pull out - I think.

Thanks Panky - think you’re right and what was expecting. The oil pan’s the pain really as it doesn’t leak so really don’t wanna remove it and can imagine a real pain with the cross member. Was hoping didn’t have to time the whole thing up again :)

No...that’s the other issue and not sure how too without getting right in there. Think they’re marked on the ends. I’m assuming a mild one as came from a single carb Hunter. The van goes very well tbh but always looking to play around in Winter :) Been reading a lot about modding cams etc on Alpines and the consensus seems to be the Hunter GT cam is a goodun and propbably fit for my purpose. That with the head mods and manifolds should give enough power. Only thing not doing is flat top pistons...I really can’t be arsed (or afford) to find a set of them and fit

Single carb Hunter is 69 bhp and twin carb engine with viscous fan is 82 bhp so would be worth the effort. When I got Harvey's engine it had the twin carb manifold, viscous fan and twin down pipes so I'm pretty sure it's the 82 bhp lump:)

Mine running 71bhp at moment with the SU on. I have a cam on the way from a twin carb head so going to see if it’s the GT or GLS cam I think they’re 298’s? I have a spare head coming too that I’m planning on doing winter work on with the Vizard mods, just hoping it doesn’t lower the compression too much without flattop pistons...we’ll see eh :). Vizard mod meant to be good for 10+ Hp but guess you need a cam and exhaust to make any real difference

Skim the head once the chambers are done to restore the CR. If you're really fancy measure the chamber volumes with a syringe before and after you do the work.
