camper wanted

ello everyone. i'm brand new to this forum and am after a commer camper. been looking on Ebay for a bit but thought you lot may be able to poke me in the right direction. im mainly a ford man and been restoring an anglia 105E for a few years. most of my mates are into VW's but they just dont do it for me like a commer! i'm looking for a tax free commer ~(~not a highwayman) for under £1000 quite happy to do some work to it but dont want another resto project. anyone got anything or know of anything that fits the bill?
thanks Dan

I missed this the first time around. Welcome along Dan. Keep you're peepers open on here as most van's make it on to here first..Most e-bay and website van's aswell. They do come up regularly but you need to be quick;)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

I missed your first post too Dan so apologies for the late....... welcome to the Madhouse:D
You may have gathered that you might struggle to get a decent van for £1000:I even resto projects are pushing that figure these days. But you must also know how much your mates are paying for their air-cooled alternatives - now they really are mad[}:)] Comparatively speaking Commers are still a cheap option.

hi and welcome to the madhouse:D as panky says you will be very very lucky to find a decent van for £1k and under:(

I would agree with the above statements, what sort of price would you be look at for a reasonable condition one? and what sort of one could you get for a grand ?

Thanks for the hello's
Yeah I know a grand ain't alot compared to vw's but it's all I can strech to at the moment. The Anglia is taking all the spare cash at the moment.
Do the prices tend to drop over winter like the vw's?
I don't know too much about the commers had a poke around one and liked what I saw though. How reliable are the engines and are there any engine swaps you. Would recommend / steer clear of?

There doesn't seem to be much of a seasonal fluctuation in prices, a couple of ££££'s maybe but hardly noticeable.
Where engines are concerned the old 1725 lump is a tough old beast but other things let it down, carbs, snakeskin blocking fuel lines (crap in the fuel tank[xx(]). A few simple mods and precautions can make a world of a difference but there are some vans that seem to go on forever without any fuss - or mods. The engines are simple and rugged and are well up to the job if you don't mind pootling along with a top speed of 65, but there are numerous ways to make it go better - decent carb and exhaust is a must, an overdrive is well worth the expence and makes for much more relaxed cruising. The next stage up is to fit an alloy head version of the engine which makes quite a difference - better performance without sacrificing fuel economy, in fact it's usually better[^]

Mmm thanks for the ideas but 65 mph is a little bit on the slow side for me was thnking of maybe a 2L from a sierra with a few mods and a 5 speed box. Has anyone done anything like this? Also has anyone lowered there van or put air bag suspension on? I was thinking of having air suspension so I can level the van easily when parked up.

Fontain has a 2 litre Pinto in with an auto box - I think John and Cara would agree it's not the best choice:I - now a Vauxhall red top that would be a good conversion and it can be done with a bit of ingenuity (and a Carlton gearbox). Plenty of lowering going on but involving spring cutting and axle flipping - a method that has it's critics but looks good.
The simplest decent power plant swap has got to be the Holbay - it's got the same block so is fairly straight forward but they can be expensive. I've got a standard Rapier engine in Harvey and with the mods I've done it can easily go off the clock[}:)] and cruise happily at the legal limit.

Welcome along :) good to hear you,ve seen the light ;)
As for engine swaps, Fontaine is A 2L pinto and lowered, admin has a Rover v8, Jay and Hut have vauxhall 8v 2L lumps, we have a 2L redtop thats pending as well as a v8, so there is some options ;)

That sounds a bit more like it looked like there was plenty of room for a larger engine from the one I looked around. Not sure about the red top though was brought up on fords!
As for lowering axel flipping? Can you not just use lowering blocks under the axel? And is there a coil over kit for the front available?

There is always the "proper Ford" 351 cleveland v8 option :p
The axle sits under the spring as standard :)
Front is a d.i.y job, get some springs made, source shocks etc ;)

Hi Sharon,

I posted this link a few days ago on here. Can you tell us a little bit about it and maybe some more photos?

Cheers
Brendan

Hi Sharon and welcome to the Madhouse:D even if it is just a fleeting visit:I
Your daughters van looks great and would be snapped up in no time if it was over here. Best of luck with the sale, it's a shame Reb isn't keeping it and joining our band of happy campers (and vanners:I)
