So after a rather dragged out collection I got her home and into the workshop. Quick bleed of the clutch and levels check got here moving about. Engine runs very smoothly.

A poke around revealed the overdrive, bonus, but lots of rust - who could have guessed!

But having said that (bar the rear foot) the chassis, cab/floor, and sills are all solid, in surprisingly good shape compared to some of the body. Someone undersealed quite comprehensively except the last foot which is now iron ore.

So welding wise I have front peek, gutter work towards rear, the roof rear corners. Then front lower valance. And some repair around the screen. And a bit of work on the bottom of all doors. Not too much then!

The pop top is going to need a complete strip and rebuild - but looks straight forward enough. Then a ground up refit of interior and cab.

But for starters came the last foot...

Well done Tom, looks like you've got a good project. When are you starting the welding?

If I see one more grease nipple........
 
I hoping to start on the month long blitz on it in about a week.

I'm going to (try and be) methodical and try and get the majority of the rot out and pre fab everything before welding rather than on the fly. So maybe not for a couple of weeks yet.

What was that about holding off on the welding!


New chassis rails in. Chased them back about 900mm to good steel. Took the floor out for good measure! Makes for easy working.

I've since welded in the spring mount bush holer 'tubes'.

Luckily my new workshop is next to a huge steel/fabricator yard. He's a little agricultural and rather eccentric but I seem to have rubbed off on him so he's keen and silly cheap.

The bad news is the roof is a mess. After getting it off it dawned on me it's had so many piss poor repairs it wasn't worth the bother of moving forward with. It's simply collapsing in on itself. Luckily I just picked up a solid Danbury pop top off ebay. Cost hurt a bit as did the 500 mile round trip to get it. But with a new canvas and clean up it will look sooo much nicer than the old top. I'll grab some pics soon. Will need a little added to front and back lip as it's off a (whispers) split screen vdub. But fits a treat.

So few other little bits done like hacked off the lower valance and doors and windows off. Unfortunately my month off work hasn't materialised yet as people insist on wanting me to do work and I'm not so good and turning it away. Hope to get a good stint starting in a couple of weeks.

Those chassis rails look beefy, they should last awhile. I'll forgive the indiscretion with the roof, but don't tell anyone else.
 
ha ha yes having kids taught me to get on with things!

The 'steel man' made me go 2mm on the rails and 2.5mm on the box! There's also a box section running across the back you can just see. If only the front was similarly strong.

Tom, forgot to say, the gutters are spot welded at 8mm centres. That's a lot of welds to unpick. I ruined a carpenters chisel using it to part the layers along the length of the gutters.
