Cam change

Hi all. Always after more power and was probing for advice. Long ago the van came with an alloy head engine from a Hunter and with a single carb so I’m assuming it has the lame 260 cam. I did a lot of work but it’s still only producing 73 bhp, If I’d known all this cam stuff pre engine re build I could’ve changed it out but this is where I am now :)

so do people know if it’s possible to read the cam numbers through the sump plug when I drain the oil out? I’ve got a cool camera I can feed in there, secondly it’s really hard to find info on just a cam swap and how difficult it is and whether you can do that with the engine in the van or not, I assume it’s a sump and oil pump off job as well as the cam chain cover?
anyone done these and can advise on it’s difficulty if I do find the cam is lame

Thank you

Here's the procedure from the Hunter manual.

and location of the cam ID, pretty sure it's located toward the back of the engine. No idea what the numbers mean so you'll need to do some research on that

The job is doable with the engine in but involved as you can see, not done it that way myself.

brilliant - thanks Panky, I have the Hunter Haynes manual but couldn't find those pages - maybe doing a Mr Magoo and will re-check it. Good news though as seems the sump doesn't need to come off after all, I’d read on a an Alpine group the oil pump needed removing

Yer rechecked and not in there just stats it’s so rare to remove the cam shaft that it’s not worth bothering mentioning outside of the full engine strip down :).
Which manual do
You have Panky so can get my hands on one unless you could photograph or scan the relevant pages :)

Just looked at the specs in the Hunter manual. 295 cam, single carb, viscous fan 74bhp. same cam but with twin carbs 82bhp and that's as high as it gets in standard form. Which pages do you need, I copy what ever you need.

Thanks Panky, yes I think I got the 260 cam with the bhp and work I’ve done. I was thinking with the hiff44 you should be able to get up to the 80’s in Hp as they’re good for 100hp in single form l. Just the removal and the installation pages - the removal you’ve done ta, so the next page?
Thanks so much

Have you thought of getting the cam reprofiled? They weld extra metal onto the lobes then regrind them. I'm pretty sure that Mr M had at least 1 done for a standard commer

Yer he did, I saw it when I last went there....well over a year ago now :( trouble is I’d have no idea what I’d want or need and probably make a mess.

I’m looking for about 90 bhp and I’ll be happy. Going electric fan, the Vizard mod and the new 295/8 cam I reckon I’ll easily achieve that which will allow me to fit the 4.22 diff and cruise at 70 mph and easily tackle those big hills in the peaks and lakes when fully loaded, fully loaded for us is a lot of weight and a trailer with 4 bikes. 70 at the moment is still a bit too many revs with the 14” on
